Alonso, Ferdinand, Sebastian, Antonio, Gonzalo, Stephano, and Trinculo are on their way to Italy after attending Alonso’s daughter Claribel’s wedding to the prince of Tunis in Africa when a storm attacks the ship they are on. With the exception of the unflappable Boatswain, the royal party and the other seafarers start to fear for their lives. The seafarers shout that the ship has been hit as lightning cracks. Everyone gets ready to drown.
The following scenario starts off much more subtly. Standing on their island’s shore and gazing out to sea at the recent shipwreck is Miranda and Prospero. Miranda begs her father to take any action he can to aid the unfortunate passengers on the ship. Prospero gives her the reassurance that everything will be OK before telling her that it is time for her to discover more about herself and her past. He informs her that he planned the shipwreck and continues the lengthy account of her past that he has frequently begun but never finished before. According to legend, Prospero held the title of Duke of Milan until his brother Antonio, working together with Alonso, the King of Naples, took it. Gonzalo gives Prospero and his daughter supplies and his books, which are the source of his magic and strength, after Prospero and his daughter are abducted and left to perish on a raft at sea. Prospero and his daughter made their way to the island, where they have been for the past twelve years. After telling Miranda this tale, Prospero lulls her to sleep before summoning Ariel, his principal magical ally. The conversation between Prospero and Ariel shows that Ariel was the cause of the ship’s storm and the mast fire. Once on the island, he made sure that everyone arrived without incident, however, they have since been divided into smaller groups.
Characters:
Prospero
Miranda’s father and the main character in the play. Prospero was the Duke of Milan twelve years prior to the play’s events. In collaboration with Alonso, the king of Naples, his brother Antonio usurped him, causing him to flee on a boat with his daughter. Gonzalo, an upright lord, helped Prospero make his getaway. In order to have the ability to both punish and pardon his adversaries, Prospero has spent his twelve years on the island perfecting the magic that grants him this ability.
Miranda
Miranda, Prospero’s daughter, was transported to the island when she was a little child and has never seen any men but her father and Caliban, though she has hazy memories of being cared for by female attendants when she was a baby. Because she has spent so much time cut off from the outside world, Miranda often has naive and uncritical views about other people. She is kind, giving, and devoted to her father.
Ariel
The spirit ally of Prospero. Although Ariel is referred to as “he” throughout this SparkNote and in the majority of criticism, his gender and physical appearance remain unclear. Ariel is Prospero’s servant until Prospero decides to free him after saving him from protracted detention at the hands of the witch Sycorax. He can instantly travel the entire length of the island, alter his shape at will, and is omnipresent and cunning. Practically all of Prospero’s tasks in the play are completed by him.
Caliban
One more of Prospero’s staff. When Prospero came, Caliban, the witch Sycorax’s now-deceased son, introduced him to the island. Caliban feels that Prospero has wrongfully taken the island away from him. He can be brusque and harsh in his speech and actions, as in his drunken moments with Stephano and Trinculo (II.ii, IV.i), or poetic and sympathetic, as in his criticism of Prospero in Act I, scene ii and his depiction of the island’s spooky beauty in Act III, scene ii (III.ii.130-138).
