Directed by Mel Gibson and starring him in the lead role, Braveheart was partially based on the life of 13th-century Scottish leader William Wallace. The film won the Academy Award for best picture as a surprise.
His clan subsequently slaughters an English garrison and Wallace continues to battle for Scotland’s independence from England, gathering adherents as word of his exploits spread. When he invades England, he seizes York from the English. As part of his war against England, Wallace enlists the help of the Scottish nobles, but they are hesitant.
Particularly conflicted is Robert the Bruce (Angus Macfadyen). Wallace engages in guerrilla warfare against the English for the next many years, fighting for his life. Robert the Elder (Ian Bannen) and other lords create a trap for Wallace and catch him.

A full-throated, bloody battle epic, “Braveheart” stars Mel Gibson as William Wallace, a legendary Scots warrior who led his nation into battle against England in the year 1330. There are many simple emotions in this film, like love, patriotism, and treachery, and it avoids the travelogue approach of so many historical swashbuckler films.
“Freedom!” was Wallace’s final cry as he lay on the rack. Gibson’s dying cry isn’t based on fact (personal freedom was not widely recognized in 1300), but that doesn’t stop him. “Braveheart,” an action epic with the spirit of Hollywood swordplay classics and the scruffy intensity of “The Road Warrior,” is a perfect fit for this. Battle scenes, which are frequent, brutal, and violent, will stick in people’s minds. Technically, “Braveheart” is a masterclass in filming large-scale battles.
As well as horsemen, foot soldiers, archers, and dirty tricks specialists, Gibson’s fight sequences don’t devolve into confusion due to the sheer number of characters. Robert the Bruce, the son of Robert the Elder, is a contender for the Scottish kingship. he knows that Robert’s father thinks the greatest way to ensure his son’s place in the kingdom is to do anything the English command him to do. This may make him appear weak, yet he is actually a highly dominant figure in his son’s life. Scottish rebel Wallace believes he can rid Scotland of English rule and secure Robert’s reign by working together with other Scots.
Longshanks, meantime, is planning an invasion but needs a distraction. Isabella, on the other hand, finds Wallace to be a pleasant surprise when she meets him in person. Wallace goes into action as she tells him about the planned invasion. It is he who invites the Scottish nobility to help him in combating the English danger.
