The Russian leader Khrushchev and his US counterpart traded active threats during the 1960 cold war. The U.S. government had no clue, however, that Russia was manufacturing nuclear warheads near enough to bomb its mainland. The CIA cannot operate in Moscow because of the hostilities between countries. And hence CIA agent Emily Donovan (Rachel Brosnahan) seeks assistance from the MI6 UK Intelligence Agency. They want to plot a man in Moscow. Who would make contacts with the Russian nuclear warheads and extract more information? However, to execute this task, they need an amateur man who KGB will not suspect and therefore find a salesman named Greville Wynne (Benedict Cumberbatch).

Greville is a straightforward businessman that works and sells things over the world. Greville is a little tentative but subsequently accepts when MI6 contacts him with regards to their clandestine mission to Moscow. He is acting as a messenger between MI6 and Penkovsky. The spy agency takes over the Soviet nuclear top-secret program, with its secret base in Cuba, through Greville. In exchange for this information, the CIA promised Penkovsky security for his own life and family. But KGB finds about his covert spy assignment. The governments of the United States and Britain strive to get them out.
“The Courier” recalls earlier spy films and the cliches they often use. In particular, you can recall the superior 2015 picture “Bridge of Spies” in the Cold War era. The two films are based on historical events and feature Russian spies, imprisoned agents, and a Russian-West interchange. However, the exchange is not part of the tale here, as the Russian spy works for MI6 and the CIA. The story “Based on true events” by Dominic Cooke and screenwriter Tom O’Connor (Benedict Cumberbatch). Wynne was a British businessman from 1960 to 1962 who, before his capture, jail, and torture by the KGB for two years, smuggled hundreds of bits of intelligence out of Russia. Together with his outstanding skill to schmooze and booze with consumers, he emerges as someone without suspicions or a danger to Soviet safety.
“He was a normal man, who threw himself into this amazing position which was to affect his life forever,” O’Connor says. “It is difficult to understand the stress of that.”

But when he began to investigate the story of Wynne, he found out that this regular person could also speak extraordinary lies. In the late 1960s the amateurs’ spy was written by a couple of novels, The Man From Moscow: The Wynne Story and Penkovsky and The Man Fron Odessa, riddled with falsehoods after he had been imprisoned for his espionage craft and was unable to aid MI6 or CIA.
“[Wynne], for all his marvelous works, bless him, was both a threat and a manufacturer,” said Nigel West. He has authored many books, in particular on manufacturers of intelligence, in British and American intelligence organizations, including two novels. “He could not really tell the truth, he just couldn’t. With him, it was pathological.”
Whilst it is less frequent for a based-on-a-truth movie to be truer than the source material when it is normal for Hollywood movies to take liberties with the facts, enter composite characters, invent imagined discussions, and fashionable timeframes to ensure an acute pace.
O’Connor points out that The Courier is “not a documentary,” even though he explains that it took himself as hard to keep to the facts, drawing on works like Jerrold L. Shecter and Peter S. Deriebin’s The Spy who Saved the World: How a Soviet colonel changed the course of the Cold War and more than the inventions of Wynne.
