Characters:

Lewis Lambert Strether

the book’s main character. Strether, a 55-year-old editor of an academic publication in Woollett, Massachusetts, has a mustache, a full head of gray-flecked hair, and he wears glasses. Strether is betrothed to Mrs. Newsome, a benevolent widow who provides funding for the publication he runs. Strether, a widower himself, lost his little kid and wife many years ago. He feels bad about these setbacks and wonders what he has missing out on by not having a wife and kids. Strether has been despatched by Mrs. Newsome to Paris in order to locate Chad Newsome and return him to Massachusetts.

Chadwick Newsome

The main subject of the book and the motivation behind Strether’s trip to Paris. Chad, a charming, affable, and independently affluent bachelor, is at present having an affair with the more senior Madame Marie de Vionnet. At first glance, it appears like Chad only benefits from his time in Paris: he has transformed from the naive, immature youngster he was in Woollett into a refined gentleman who is at ease in Parisian high society and frequently plays host to a diverse, interesting group of acquaintances.

Maria Gostrey

a 33-year-old single expat who serves as an unofficial “guide” to Europe for American tourists. She resides in Paris. When Miss Gostrey and Strether first meet in England, Miss Gostrey likes him right away. She provides Strether with incisive and unbiased analysis of events and individuals outside of the Woollett society, and Strether enlists her smart advice. Despite being young and vivacious, she is less trusting of people’s intentions and more world-weary than Strether.

Madame Marie de Vionnet

the senior citizen with whom Chad Newsome has started dating. For many years, Madame de Vionnet lived apart from her “brute” husband. She went to school with Maria Gostrey when she was 15 years old, but they haven’t spoken in a while and Maria stays away from her. Around the age of 38, Madame de Vionnet has developed into a social elite, a handsome, and a highly cultured woman who overshadows Strether’s remembrance of Mrs. Newsome. Madame de Vionnet, who is madly in love with Chad, makes a decision to keep him in Europe and in her life.
