Characters:

Adam Bede

both the novel’s protagonist and a carpenter. Adam is physically fit, smart, and somewhat well-educated for a farmer. He works hard and is dependable. Adam’s pride serves as the narrative’s main driving force throughout the entire novel. Adam considers hard effort to be at least as significant as religion itself and a means of carrying out God’s will. He despises all forms of evil and finds it incomprehensible how a person may decide something is terrible and still carry it out. Adam is looked up to by his peers, yet this does not drive him. He believes that a job well done is reward enough.

Dinah Morris

a Methodist minister who aims to spread God’s love to everyone in her vicinity. The other characters, especially Hetty in the final hours before her scheduled death, find solace in Dinah’s soft nature and selfless attitude. All the other characters are drawn to Dinah because her outward beauty complements her inner tranquility. Even when it means denying herself enjoyment, she feels obligated to aid those who are most in need. She eventually comes to the conclusion that God’s will and her personal happiness are not always at odds.

Hetty Sorrel

An astonishingly lovely little peasant girl. The main plot of the book is her demise. Hetty is superficial and self-centered. Even after experiencing some adjustments as a result of her humiliation, she still prioritizes her own pain over that of others. Hetty is equally stupid. She has little understanding of how the world actually works and shows no gratitude to Mr. and Mrs. Poyser for adopting and nurturing her when she was an orphan. Hetty desires that everyone acknowledge her attractiveness. Hetty plays against Dinah’s persona.

Captain Arthur Donnithorne

a young soldier in an unit who is the Chase heir. He humiliates Hetty because of his conceit that he is a decent person. Despite everything that has occurred and even in the face of evidence that his horrible deeds have had consequences, Captain Donnithorne is adamant that he is, at his core, a good man. Every time, he attempts to buy his way out. Even his ambition to be a nice person is essentially a desire to be regarded as one by others. Although he doesn’t care enough to tell Adam the truth about Hetty, Captain Donnithorne does care about Adam. Even though he cares deeply for Hetty, their social differences prevent them from being together.
