Aeneas and his fellow Trojans flee from their home city of Troy, which the Greeks have devastated, across the Mediterranean Sea. They set course for Italy, where Aeneas will create Rome. As they get closer to their target, a powerful storm causes them to lose their bearings and land in Carthage. They are greeted by Dido, the founder and ruler of Carthage. The lengthy and traumatic account of his group’s so far’s journey is what Aeneas tells Dido.
After a ten-year Greek siege, Aeneas recounts the sack of Troy, which put an end to the Trojan War. The Trojans were duped during the final campaign when they allowed a wooden horse into their city walls that, unbeknownst to them, contained a number of Greek soldiers in its hollow belly. He describes how he and his father, Anchises, son, Ascanius, and the hearth gods that stand in for their destroyed city fled the burning city. The gods had promised him a splendid future in Italy, so he sailed with a fleet of Troy’s remaining residents. Aeneas describes the difficulties they encountered traveling. Twice they tried to establish a new city, but epidemics and terrible omens forced them to abandon their plans. They were cursed by harpies, beings that are a combination of a lady and a bird, but they also unintentionally ran into friendly neighbors. Dido, a Phoenician princess who fled her country and created Carthage after her brother killed her husband, is impressed by Aeneas’ deeds and sympathetic to his suffering, and she falls in love with him. They spend some time living together as lovers before the gods tell Aeneas that he must start a new city. He makes the decision to set sail once more. After learning of his departure, Dido orders the construction of a massive pyre using Aeneas’s abandoned belongings. She then climbs up on the pyre and kills herself with the sword he leaves behind. Aeneas
the Aeneid’s main character. Aeneas is a survivor of the siege of the Asiatic city of Troy. His piety, or respect for the divine will, is what makes him who he is. He is a ferocious warrior and a charismatic leader who can inspire his followers in the face of difficulty, but he is also a man with a deep capacity for sympathy and grief. He prioritizes this task above everything else since it is his destiny to establish the Roman race in Italy. His trip from Troy to Italy, which allows him to carry out his fate, is the subject of The Aeneid.
Dido
Aeneas’ sweetheart and the queen of Carthage, a city in modern-day Tunisia in northern Africa. Dido left Tyre when her husband was killed by her brother Pygmalion. Although she and her city are powerful, she ends up playing the unlucky pawn in the gods’ conflict over Aeneas’s fate. Her devotion to Aeneas ultimately leads to her demise. She builds a funeral pyre and uses Aeneas’ sword to stab herself on it after he deserts her.
Turnus
the Italian Rutulians’ supreme leader. The main mortal enemy of Aeneas is Turnus. Right up until Aeneas shows up, he is Lavinia’s top suitor. Despite Latinus’s readiness to permit the Trojans to dwell in Latium and Turnus’s awareness that he cannot successfully resist fate, this rivalry drives him to go to war with the Trojans. He is a capable soldier who loves his honor above his life. He is brazen and courageous.
Ascanius
Young Aeneas, by his first wife Creusa. The main significance of Ascanius (also known as Iulus) is that he represents Aeneas’s destiny, which is the establishment of the Roman race. Ascanius, while still being a child, is given multiple chances during the epic to show his bravery and leadership. While his father is absent, he helps to defend the Trojan camp from Turnus’s onslaught and leads a procession of lads on horseback at the Book V festivities.
