Ominous music plays when an automobile springs up in a dark and menacing urban setting from steam. Travis Bickle’s eyes are blinking with the camera which seems threatening. Travis introduces us in the first scene after credits when he interviews for a job as a taxi driver. The interviewer shows he was also a navy and encourages Travis to return for a job the following day. Travis leaves and in the wide daylight starts to drink from a bottle.

Editor’s Picks

So does his diary, which we hear as the voiceover when Travis’s work as the driver of a cab starts. Travis says that New York is unclean and talks about how his passengers do not discriminate. On a regular day, we observe him driving. When he goes to work for twelve hours in the night in the morning, he immediately starts to drink and goes to a porn movie. At the door, the concessionary lady, a young black woman, attempts to be nice. She swiftly turned down his efforts, so he stayed in the porn theater alone his morning. Travis says that, even after working all night, he can’t sleep and he talks about trying to becoming more normal. He wants somewhere to go and fit in with others. Travis sometimes goes out at an all-night dinner with other cabbies. The black cab driver Charlie T and the other black folks in the dinner plainly make him uneasy.

This is the last line that is never quoted, “I am here the lone one, well.” It’s the truest line of the movie. Travis Bickle exists as a character with a desperate yearning to somehow make a contact in “Taxi Driver” to share or imitate the seamless social interaction which he sees around him but does not.

The film is a series of his unsuccessful attempts to connect, each of which is desperately incorrect. On a date, he asks a female, and brings her to a porn film. He’s so lonely he’s speaking in a mirror when he wonders, “Who are you speaking to?.”

This complete solitude is the crux of “Taxi Driver,” one of the best and most dramatic films, which may explain why so many people relate with it, despite Travis Bickle being the most alienating of protagonists of the film. We felt like Travis alone. Most of us deal with it better.

Travis Bickle is a weird and nameless cab driver who sweeps through New York City’s streets at night and hangs in porn theaters and rages silently against the city’s deprivation. We know nothing about him and the fact that he is obviously a former navy and a veteran of Vietnam. Part of him desires love or some type of relationship. He’s looking for it with Betsy — a presidential campaign staffer Charles Palantine.

About the quiz

At first, Betsy also seems attracted and agrees to be with him on a date. When Travis decides to take her to a porn movie, things are badly wrong.

Betsy’s off and leaves. Travis is becoming angrier and angrier and more unstable. There appears to be no good advice from other taxi drivers.

Gradually, Travis deepens into fantasies of violence. He begins to work and tries to become a first-rate murderer and buy an arsenal of weapons. It is uncertain if Travis truly killed him or not, while it is likely plausible, that he kills a thief who is trying to build up a convenience store. At the same time, he is preoccupied with releasing a prostitute named Iris who is twelve years old, who seems unwilling to be working for her pimp, an oily man named Sport. When she tries to enter in, he meets her.

Travis finally begins to fantasize about the assassination of the presidential candidate Betsy. However, as he moves, Palantine cannot be clearly understood, and the secret service spots him. Without arrest warrants, he escapes successfully.

He decided to expose his wrath in a socially acceptable way instead of killing Palantine: he was rampant, he killed Iris’s pimp, and he killed Sport as well as the two criminals that were in the brothel/hotel where Iris works. Travis tries to end himself after his murder spree…but he’s out of youthfulness.
