Three Types of Spiritual Gifts
Spiritual gifts are classified into three types. These gifts are not something we have; they are God’s supernatural ability manifesting itself in various ways in our lives. The Bible refers to it as a manifestation.

“There are various types of gifts, but they are all distributed by the same Spirit.” There are various types of service, but the Lord is the same. There are various types of work, but it is the same God at work in everyone and in everyone. The manifestation of the Spirit is now given to each individual for the common good.” NIV (1 Corinthians 12:4–7)

Editor’s Picks

There are three types of gifts: ministry gifts, manifestation gifts, and motivational gifts. In various ways, all believers participate in these gifts.

Let’s take a look at each one separately.

Ministry is one of the Holy Spirit’s gifts.
The ministry gifts are the ways God uses what believers do to serve and meet the needs of others. It is how we share God’s love, grace, and truth with others. To administer is to apply and put into action.

“There are differences in administration, but the Lord is the same.” (1 Corinthians 12:5 King James Version)

The Bible lists these ministering gifts and their functions.

“And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, until we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of Christ.” (Ephesians 4:11-13, italics added)

Many people refer to them as the “fivefold ministry.” Although not everyone is called to the ministry, 1 Corinthians 12:28 mentions a gift for helping. Also, you must try to play this Spiritual Gifts Quiz.

Holy Spirit Gifts: Manifestation
People tend to sensationalize manifestation gifts and thus disqualify themselves from enjoying them. According to 1 Corinthians 12:7, God gives to all of us, not just some. This includes everyone.

“Now the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the common good.” To one is given a message of wisdom through the Spirit, to another a message of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to others miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All of these are the work of the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one as he sees fit.” 1 Corinthians 12:7-11 (emphasis mine)

This supernatural manifestation of the Holy Spirit’s power is intended to both serve others and minister to ourselves. It’s common to believe that these gifts are only for ministering to others, but this is limiting God’s grace. When you ask for a message of wisdom, the Spirit can give it to you just as easily as He can give it to someone else. Allow the Holy Spirit to minister to you as well.

These manifestation gifts are the means by which God works through us to bring joy and fruitfulness into each of our lives.

Holy Spirit Gifts: Motivational
The Spirit of Grace moves through us, motivating our words and actions through motivational gifts. It’s a filter for our perspective that shapes how we relate to and serve others.

“We each have different gifts, depending on the grace given to us.” If your gift is prophesying, prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, serve; if it is teaching, teach; if it is encouraging, encourage; if it is giving, give generously; if it is leading, lead diligently; if it is showing mercy, show mercy cheerfully.” (Emphasis added) (Romans 12:6–8)

Finding Your Motivation
Examine the why of your actions. This is how you’ll figure out which one motivates you.

All of these gifts are wonderful and have a place in the world. Some may appear to be more important than others, but this is not the case. Our ego is getting in the way.

The Bible instructs us to desire the best gifts, and the best gifts are those that we require at the time.

What is the most valuable spiritual gift?
“As a result, you should earnestly seek the most beneficial gifts.” But now let me show you the best way of life of all.” 1 Corinthians 12:31 NLT (italics mine)

Gifts are wonderful, but knowing how to love is far more important. As a gift, God has given us His love. We love because He first loved us. Without love, all actions that are meant to be gifts are meaningless.
