Chihiro, a ten-year-old girl, sulks in her parents’ car’s rear seat. Chihiro does not want to relocate, and the family is on its way to a new home in a new town. They come across the entrance to an abandoned theme park when her father gets lost while taking a shortcut. The parents look into it and discover a derelict stall stacked high with food. They begin to eat, and before long, they’re both stuffed. They try to force Chihiro to eat, but she refuses since she has a horrible feeling about it. Chihiro goes off on her own. A boy approaches while she is exploring and warns her to leave before dark. When she returns to the stall, she discovers that her parents have changed into pigs.
As night falls, the park is filled with ghostly spirits, and Chihiro begins to become transparent. The boy reappears and persuades her to take food from the spirit world in order to prevent her from vanishing.

Ogino Chihiro and her parents are in the last steps of moving into their new home when the film begins. Chihiro’s father takes a shortcut to their new home that leads them to the ghost world. Despite Chihiro’s furious opposition, her father insists on investigating their unusual surroundings, and when they come to find an empty restaurant stall laden with food, her parents foolishly decide to help themselves to the spread, consuming the food with abandon. The majority of moviegoers will just interpret certain parts of the screen as “movement.” But if we look closely, we can see that things are actually happening. That’s what I’m talking about when I say “generosity and love.” Mikayazi and his colleagues put as much effort into the less important sections of the frame as they do on the more important ones. Take note of how much of the bathhouse is visible. Showing merely a bridge and a doorway would have been quicker and easier. However, Miyazaki imbues his bathhouse with the realism of a genuine place, complete with features whether or not the tale necessitates them.
