The opening scenes in kidnapping thrillers often give the audience a false sense of security by depicting the monotony of daily life that will soon be disturbed. The direction is not taken in “Prisoners” by Denis Villeneuve. The opening scene takes place in a snowy forest, as a deer cautiously investigates its surroundings. The muzzle of a shotgun enters the scene. The sound of a prayer is audible. The deer drops with a thud. The somewhat humorless, stern, and slightly boring father spends the car ride home lecturing his kid on the need of being ready for the worst.
It’s incredible that the picture doesn’t immediately implode beneath the symbolic weight of its start. The legendary cinematographer for the Coen brothers, Roger Deakins, filmed the film amid rainy, colorless settings. While there are some powerful moments in “Prisoners,” the film as a whole is very ludicrous (despite its obvious desire to be taken extremely seriously) and the acting is often over the top. Keller Dover (Jackman) is a freelancer who, along with his wife Grace (Maria Bello) and their two children, makes their home in a middle-class suburb. He has a basement full of survival supplies and is obsessed with Bruce Springsteen, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” hunting, and canning. The Dovers celebrate Thanksgiving with their neighbors, Franklin and Nancy Birch (Terrence Howard and Viola Davis), who also have two young children. Little girls ask to go for a walk while their parents socialize over wine in the living room. They go for a stroll from which they never emerge. The disappearance of a mysterious RV that had been spotted parked in the area earlier causes widespread panic. The case has been given to Detective Loki (Jake Gyllenhaal). Owner Alex Jones (Paul Dano) is hauled in for interrogation when his RV is stopped. The RV has been cleared of physical evidence, according to forensics, but Alex is acting strangely. His voice is so high and whispery that he comes across as a young child. It’s possible he’s trying to conceal something from you. This is obviously Dover’s interpretation, and he and Loki quickly find themselves at odds on how to proceed with the probe. Dover takes matters into his own hands, kidnapping Jones, and holds him prisoner in an abandoned rundown building, when Jones is freed owing to lack of proof (into the custody of his aunt, played by Melissa Leo). Dover discusses his strategy to extract the truth from Jones with Franklin Birch. When Birch sees Jones bound and gagged in front of the bathroom sink, his moral compass tells him to go the other way. However, he gives in to Dover’s furious certainty and does just that. That confidence can win out over doubt with enough force is one of the script’s subtler messages, and that uncertainty is often necessary to keeping our humanity intact is another.
