In this children’s film, the world in which we should live is portrayed as opposed to the reality in which we already live. This is a film that has no villains whatsoever. There are no battle sequences in the book. There are no adults who are bad. The two children did not fight. There are no frightful monsters to be found here. There is no night before the day. A little-known family film, “My Neighbor Totoro”, has become one of the most treasured of all. It’s a video top seller that’s been around for years. Behind Toy Story 2 and ahead of Shrek, it is rated as the fifth-best family film of all time by the Internet Movie Database.
Anime Encyclopedia declares it the best-animated picture ever created in Japan, and there’s little wonder. When I see it, I can’t stop smiling.
Hayao Miyazaki is widely referred to be the greatest Japanese animator, although Isao Takahata, his colleague at Ghibli Studios, maybe his equal. “Totoro” and “Grave of the Fireflies” were released in 1988 as part of a double bill. A-frame at a time, the old-fashioned approach, is the only way Miyazaki has animated his films up until very recently. The master himself draws tens of thousands of frames. On a country road in 1950s Tokyo, 11-year-old Satsuki and 4-year-old Mei Kusakabe are riding in a truck. Their father is an anthropology professor at a Tokyo university, and they are on their way to their new home in the country with their father by their sides. As their mother recovers from an illness, the family has invested in a new home to offer her a healthier atmosphere in which to recuperate.

Satsuki finds across an acorn on the floor and decides to investigate. It isn’t long until she finds another, and she wonders if squirrels live in the house and leave them behind. They move into an ancient house so they may be closer to their wife Yasuko, a professor (Tatsuo Kusakabe), and his two daughters (Satsuki and Mei). In the hospital, the girls’ mother is undergoing treatment for a long-term health condition.
Satsuki and Mei run to their father to inform him of this great discovery. Nanny, a neighbor who helps the family move in, is passing by. The old lady tells girls she saw the same spirits as they did when she was younger. After the family has settled in, Nanny reassures them that the ghosts will ultimately leave the house.
Mei encounters two little critters one day while playing in the backyard. Despite their best efforts to flee, Mei chases them into the wilderness. After losing them for a moment, she ends up tumbling on top of a large fluffy animal. Mei names the spirit Totoro when he makes a series of roaring noises. Then, she slips into a deep slumber.
She realizes Mei’s absence upon her return home from school. Mei’s older sister and father begin their search for her as soon as they learn of her disappearance. Satsuki notices Mei’s hat as she approaches the forest’s gate. In the jungle, she finds Mei napping on the ground, having fled from her pursuers. The family asks Mei to show them where Totoro lives when she awakens, but she refuses. Mei, on the other hand, is unable to locate the location despite her repeated efforts. Totoro may only reveal himself when he wants to, explains her father.
