Characters:

Beatrice

Hero’s cousin and Leonato’s niece. Beatrice has a very keen tongue and is “a pleasant-spirited lady.” She is kind and caring, but, like Benedick, she constantly makes fun of other people by making clever puns and jokes. She engages in a wits’ fight with Benedick and frequently prevails. She seems willing to never get married at the beginning of the play.

Benedick

a nobleman who has lately served as Don Pedro’s soldier and is close friends with Claudio and Don Pedro. Benedick is quite funny and frequently uses puns and jokes. He engages in a “merry fight” of wits with Beatrice, although he makes a vow at the start of the play that he will never marry or fall in love.

Claudio

a young soldier who has achieved tremendous fame while serving with Don Pedro in recent conflicts. When Claudio returns to Messina, he falls in love with Hero. Unfortunately, he has a suspicious character that makes him quick to believe malicious stories and rapid to give up and seek retribution.

Hero

The cousin of Beatrice and the lovely little daughter of Leonato. Hero is beautiful, amiable, and decent. She falls in love with Claudio when he does, but she suffers greatly when Don John disparages her and Claudio hastily exacts revenge.
