Venable is in charge of Outpost 3, an ornate Gothic bunker with several stories underground that serves as the main stage for American Horror Story: Apocalypse, Ryan Murphy’s popular horror series’ ninth season. Surviving captives are tormented with repetitive music, cannibalism, and severe beatings. Things continue in this manner until Michael Langdon appears at their home 18 months after Armageddon. He resembles a character from a vampiric Y.A. novel. He informs Venable that there is another, stronger outpost out there – a “shelter” – and that he has come to choose who in Outpost 3 is deserving of a transfer.

In the first episode of Apocalypse, we learn that the nuclear bombs were launched on purpose by an organization called the Cooperative, which sought to annihilate humanity. When Michael arrives at Outpost 3, he displays a credential revealing that he is a Cooperative member, possibly the leader. His arrival should herald the coming of more answers, most notably: What are his motivations? What is his connection to the coven? (Apocalypse was billed as a crossover season between Murder House and the Coven.) How will the Earth look after Armageddon? And what happened to Constance?
Jessica Lange will be back for one episode this season to reprise her Murder House role. Perhaps her reappearance will be a flashback, or we’ll discover she’s also a member of the Cooperative and lives in the sanctuary outpost Michael mentions.
