About 25 minutes into the inarticulate and sloppy musical biopic “Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” the film achieves its high point: CEO of Arista Records Clive Davis (Stanley Tucci) walks into a club where gospel great Cissy Houston (Tamara Tunie) and her daughter Houston (Naomi Ackie) are playing. The mother fakes a loss of voice when she spots the A&R man taking his seat, allowing the daughter to perform “The Greatest Love of All.” Her voice soars, returning to the grandiose heights that made her famous in the first place. We observe Davis’s attention toward her. You can see the cash signs in his eyes in that close-up. One woman in my viewing lit a cigarette and waved it to the beat of Houston’s indelible vibrato, so moving was the moment.
In that brief sequence, “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” seems to be moving toward an honest account of the destruction of a singer’s voice, skill, and person through the simplification of her essence for the sake of commercial gain. But director Kasi Lemmons struggles to bring the character to life beyond the tabloid snippets of her life, thanks to Anthony McCarten’s (“Bohemian Rhapsody”) scattershot writing. Also, you will find out which character are you in this I Wanna Dance With Somebody quiz.
I Wanna Dance With Somebody quiz
As the film opens short in 1994 at the American Music Awards before flashing back to 1983 in New Jersey, “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” makes a concerted effort to create an intuitive throughline for Houston’s life. In the end, though, Lemmons’s strategy for returning to the AMAs doesn’t make much emotional or rational sense. Also, you must try to play this I Wanna Dance With Somebody quiz.
And yet, for the time being at least, we can take in the Lemmons saga without much trouble. Houston, or “Nippy” as her friends call her, meets and begins a lesbian relationship with Robyn Crawford (Nafessa Williams), and Lemmons deserves credit for not glossing over this aspect of Houston’s private life. After much persuasion from her mother Cissy and her selfish father John Houston (Clarke Peters), Houston signs with the unwavering Clive Davis and works to soften her butch image so that she can become the princess of America. In no time at all, she’s amassing hits. Unfortunately, these sequences move at such a breakneck pace that you could think Lemmons is just trying to get to the story she really wants to convey.
