The Hunger Games is a trilogy of young adult dystopian novels written by Suzanne Collins, well known for her work on Nickelodeon’s early 1990s show Clarissa Explains It All. The books depict Panem, a dystopian, futuristic United States-like society divided into 12 districts, ruled by a Capitol, and forced to participate in a dreadful game of bloodsport by the Capitol.
Collins’ books have been enormously popular — Scholastic estimated in 2012 that 50 million copies of the books had been sold — and are now being adapted into films. The Hunger Games, the first book in the series, was released in 2008 and was adapted into a film in 2012. The sequel, Catching Fire, was released in 2009, and a film adaptation was released last year. Mockingjay, the final book in the series, will be split into two films, with the first chapter entering theaters today.

Finally, the hour has come. Katniss is brought into the arena from a small underground room, and the Games officially begin. All of the tributes are present, and in front of her is the Cornucopia, which has a plethora of goods. Rather than fighting, she flees, as Haymitch recommended. She hikes for the entire day before setting up camp. Someone sets a fire close after dark, and it isn’t long before a pack of Career Tributes appears and kills the victim. Peeta is among them, much to Katniss’ surprise. Katniss travels in quest of water the next day. She treks for hours and falls from tiredness, but she eventually comes across a stream. She is awakened in the middle of the night by a wall of fire advancing toward her, and as she flees, one of the several fireballs falling around her grazes her leg, wounding it.
