And what good is a British summer if Wimbledon isn’t there? It is one of the most recognized tennis competitions in the world, lasting two weeks and attracting over 500,000 spectators and millions upon millions of TV viewers worldwide.
To commemorate the 141st year of the most uniquely British athletic event of them all, here are some amusing facts about Wimbledon:

- Always remember that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.
Wimbledon is one of four Grand Slam tennis tournaments contested each year. These tournaments are regarded as the most important of the tennis season. Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam tournament held on grass courts. The grass is maintained all year. And it’s chopped to a height of exactly 8 mm during the event. Wimbledon hosted its first championship in 1877, making it the world’s oldest tennis tournament. That year, the sole event was the Men’s Singles. Ladies’ singles and men’s doubles events debuted in 1884. The Ladies’ Doubles and Mixed Doubles events were added to the competition in 1913.
- Strict Dress Requirements
According to Wimbledon rules, all players must be dressed almost exclusively in white. If a player’s attire does not satisfy the dress code, the umpires have the authority to ask them to change. For example, Wimbledon champion Roger Federer was advised in 2013 to change his shoes for his next match because they had orange soles.

54,250 tennis balls are used during the tournament. The balls are replaced every seven to nine games to ensure they remain in great condition throughout the game. Those that are not in use are even kept in a refrigerated container to keep them in pristine shape. Wimbledon, interestingly, used to utilize white tennis balls. However, in 1986, they were replaced with yellow balls to make them more visible to television cameras.
- In the Field
Around 250 ball boys and girls, or BBGs, are tasked with keeping track of all those fast-moving tennis balls. BBGs go through strenuous training sessions months before the competition to prepare for Wimbledon.
Sixth. We Are Champions
Martina Navratilova, a retired Czech and American player, holds the record for the most Wimbledon titles in Ladies’ Singles, with nine victories. The most titles in Men’s Singles are shared by William Renshaw, Pete Sampras, and Roger Federer, who have won the event seven times.
- Display the Trophy
In 2014, the Men’s and Ladies’ Singles Champions each received approximately $3 million in prize money. Aside from cash prizes, champions are also awarded a trophy. The winner of the Ladies competition receives a salver, a round platter produced in 1864. The Men’s champion also receives a gold cup dating back to 1887. The trophy is not kept by any of the winners. They are still on display at the museum of the All England Club. Winners, however, receive a miniature duplicate of the trophy.
