Thirteen-year-old New York City resident Brian Robeson boards a plane from Hampton, New York, for his father’s cabin in the Canadian north woods. Both “The Secret” that his mother is having an affair and his parent’s recent divorce is very difficult for him. He receives very quick flying instruction from the pilot, during which Brian pilots the aircraft for a short period of time. The agony in the pilot’s stomach, arm, and shoulder seem to be becoming worse. Brian initially does not consider it to be a severe situation, but when the pilot starts to move in his seat, it is evident that he is having a heart attack. As the attack comes to an end and the pilot is already dead, Brian is left in charge. Brian is left trapped as the plane crashes into a lake in the Canadian forests following a terrifying fall.
Although he is undernourished and hurt from the collision, Brian is optimistic that help will arrive soon. He comes across some unusual berries to eat, but they make him quite ill. After that, he comes across a raspberry patch and sees a bear there. After building a shelter, Brian hears a noise in the middle of the night. Brian hurls the hatchet in the direction of a porcupine that has invaded his refuge. It pierces Brian’s leg with its quills, leaving him in excruciating pain.
