The one-hour series follows an optimistic high school teacher as he attempts to transform the school’s Glee Club and inspire a ragtag group of performers to compete in the biggest competition of all: Nationals.

McKinley High School’s Glee Club was once at the pinnacle of the show choir world, but a series of scandals have turned it into a haven for misfits and social outcasts. Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison, “Hairspray”) has offered to undertake the Herculean task of restoring the Glee Club to its former glory.

Editor’s Picks

Even with the assistance of fellow teacher Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays, “Ugly Betty”), it won’t be easy because the “brightest stars” of the pitch-imperfect club include Kurt (Chris Colfer), a nerdy soprano with a flair for the dramatic; Mercedes (Amber Riley), a dynamic diva-in-training who refuses to sing back up; Arty (Kevin McHale). Will’s only hope is Rachel (Lea Michele, “Spring Awakening”), a perfectionist firecracker convinced that show choir is her ticket to stardom; and Finn (Cory Monteith, “Kyle XY”), the popular high school quarterback with movie star looks and a Motown voice who must protect his cool reputation from his holier-than-thou girlfriend, Quinn (Dianna Agron), and his arrogant teammate, Puck (Mark Salling).

Will is adamant about doing whatever it takes to make Glee great again, even if everyone around him thinks he’s crazy. From his tough-as-nails wife Terri (Jessalyn Gilsig, “Nip/Tuck”) to McKinley’s cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch, “Best In Show,” “Role Models”) to a uber-hip world that believes jazz hands and sequined tuxedos litter the road to infamy rather than pave the way to Hollywood dreams, he’s out to prove them all

It’s the end of an era: Fox’s Glee wrapped up McKinley High on Friday with a two-hour series finale that revealed not only the origins of New Directions but also the futures of its alums.

The two-part finale, written by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan, also paid tribute to former leading man Cory Monteith, who died in 2013 at the age of 31, with a scene that focused on Finn’s huge heart for the final time and included a performance of “Don’t Stop Believin'” from the pilot.

About the quiz

As Murphy previously revealed, his original plan for Glee’s ending was for Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) to return home to Ohio to reunite with love Finn Hudson (Monteith) — now the coach of New Directions — after achieving career success but feeling unfulfilled.

Instead, after New Directions won Nationals, McKinley was transformed into a performing arts school under the direction of its new principal, Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison). The glee club greets him with a hero’s welcome, and auditions for the following season begin — only under his leadership, there will be multiple glee clubs at McKinley, with Sam (Chord Overstreet) taking over as coach of New Directions and continuing the trajectory that Finn began.

Overstreet had spent much of Sam’s final season romancing Rachel and rooting for her to return to college while also working with Sheldon (Dot-Marie Jones) to support McKinley High’s football team. Sam takes over New Directions and foregoes a move to New York to live with Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Blaine after his football job all but vanishes after McKinley is transferred to an art school (Darren Criss).

“It’s such a massive journey; you don’t know where it’s going to go until it gets there,” Overstreet told THR. “I think everyone was pleased with it. It’s a fitting conclusion for Sam. I’m not sure where else you’d go with it unless it’s back on the pole while Stallion is doing his thing! Aside from that, I’m feeling pretty good about it.”
