A great poet and swordsman named Cyrano de Bergerac fall madly in love with his lovely, educated cousin Roxane in Paris in the year 1640. Despite Cyrano’s intelligence and charisma, his appearance is afflicted by an alarmingly wide nose, and he feels too unattractive to chance to tell Roxane his affections. Cyrano decides to cause trouble one evening by going to the playhouse at the Hotel de Bourgogne. He had forbidden actor Montfleury from performing on stage for a month, but Montfleury had planned to appear in the production of La Clorise that evening with Roxane watching from the crowd. A young, appealing aristocrat named Christian is also present, and he confesses to his friend Ligniere that he has feelings for Roxane.

Editor’s Picks

Cyrano intimidates Montfleury when he attempts to take the stage. Cyrano refuses to be sent away by a group of aristocracy and instead dares them all to a duel. He engages in combat with Valvert, a Vicomte that the Comte de Guiche had chosen as Roxane’s future husband. Cyrano composes a poem about the duel as he fights. After delivering his final words, Cyrano drives his sword home. As a result of the publicity surrounding his triumph, Roxane’s duenna gives him a note from her mistress asking him to meet her the next morning. As he does so, he finds out that Ligniere’s most recent satire insulted a prominent nobleman, and that a hundred soldiers are ready to attack him on his way home. Cyrano brazenly declares that he will do whatever it takes to bring Ligniere home safely, including engaging in combat with all one hundred men. Also, you must try to play this Cyrano quiz.

Characters:

Cyrano de Bergerac

A Southern French guardsman who is also a poet, swordsman, scientist, writer, musician, and member of the Cadets of Gascoyne. Cyrano is ugly and cursed with an absurdly big nose, which makes him insecure and prevents him from confessing his love to his cousin Roxane despite his tremendous talents.

Roxane

A lovely and intelligent heiress who is Cyrano’s cousin. She enjoys poetry, wit, and romance in particular.

Baron Christian de Neuvillette

Christian, a lovely but unassuming young aristocrat who lacks wit and intelligence, is maybe the antithesis of Cyrano. He joins Cyrano’s company of cadets early in the play after falling in love with Roxane when new to Paris and the cadets. Only Roxane can equal his good looks.

Comte de Guiche

a strong, married nobleman who loves Roxane and dislikes Cyrano. He makes many attempts to have Cyrano slain, once by a hundred men and is deceitful and perpetually angry.
