Black Crab Quiz – Which Character Are You?

Crab with Black Bean Sauce, a specialty at Lin’s China Garden on Bayard Street in Manhattan’s Chinatown, was introduced to me when I was younger when my New Jersey palate was being trained in more refined things by some slightly older friends. I won’t go into detail, but suffice it to say it was one of the messiest and most delectable meals I’ve ever had. And I was able to enjoy it several times before Lin’s closed. I’ve never been able to find a synonym for it. It irritates me that the title “Black Crab” makes me think of the meal. The thought of it makes me hungry.

Editor’s Picks

The name “Black Crab” refers to a team recruited for a potentially victory-snagging probable suicide mission in a not-too-distant-future war to end all wars or all of the civilization itself, in this bleak, tense sci-fi war film from Sweden. I know, it’s exactly the kind of thing we’re all looking forward to right now. (Not to belabor the point, but I’d rather be eating crab with black bean sauce at Lin’s China Garden.) The film, directed by Adam Berg and based on Jerker Virdborg’s well-received sci-fi novel of the same name, begins with a scene in which Noomi Rapace, as Caroline Edh, sits in a car with her daughter, stuck in a tunnel traffic jam. The David Bowie end-of-the-world song “Five Years” comes on the radio, right on the nose, and the tunnel fills with gunfire and soldiers, and we blackout on Edh and her young daughter hiding in the backseat.

Cut to a few years later, and Edh, as she’s referred to for the majority of the film, is a soldier on her way to receive orders. Her mode of transportation is far from first class. More or less a cattle car on a train. When she disembarks, she is approached by a woman who offers her soup and assures her that it is not tainted. Could the soup woman have a boyfriend at the base, Edh?—and a man, Edh’s commander, ends that conversation. This lieutenant then drives Edh into hostile territory, leaving her stranded. She, on the other hand, fights her way out. Later, he appears as the commander of her Black Crab assignment. Yikes! One of the factors contributing to the film’s thrills and chills is this character’s ultimate mettle and motivation. Also, you must try to play this Black Crab Quiz.

So, what about this mission, you may wonder. There’s an ice-covered archipelago in this “time of the wolves,” as their recruiter, General Raad (David Dencik), puts it. At the end of which is a location where, if the team is successful, they will deliver two mysterious packages that will result in victory for their team. (In this dystopian scenario, specific countries are never mentioned, and the place names that do appear are fictitious.) The problem is that the ice is too thin to be traversed by automobiles, and the sea passageways are too narrow for an, etc.

About the quiz

When the recruiter said, “It could be navigated by soldiers with ice skates,” I had to admit that I laughed out loud. Okay! However, in Anthony Mann’s 1965 film “The Heroes of Telemark,” the brave marauders led by Kirk Douglas and Richard Harris arrived at their Nazi target on skis, and that film was based on a true story and is a stealth war-picture classic (as well as an influence on Christopher Nolan’s “Inception”), so why not? And sure enough, the sight of this hard-bitten half-dozen in silhouette, shushing across black stretches of ice, occasionally pausing to peer beneath them at the dozens of drowned corpses (climate change figures here because of course it does). Edh admits early on that this is a suicide mission, but she’s given a reason to try to make it something else—the chance to reunite with her daughter, who she’s told was found in a refugee camp of sorts. Her yearning fuels the flashbacks that are interspersed with the betrayal-filled, frequently gruesome journey across the ice. During this time the usual heinous secrets are revealed. War is hell on multiple levels. Especially when Edh is faced with the unavoidable Moral Choices.

Rapace, who I guess is now a reigning force in fantasy fare, delivers the stoic toughness (which will, of course, eventually crack) that has become a performance trademark for her. (This is the actress’ first Swedish film in ten years, and it’s a warm welcome back!) The effects are sometimes a little too convincing. The gloom is practically engulfing you. Is it, however, all about hope in the end? “Black Crab” is engrossing enough to make you want to keep reading to find out what happens.
