Angels in America is about two problematic couples, one gay and one straight: “word processor” Louis Ironson and his lover Prior Walter, and Mormon lawyer Joe Pitt and his wife Harper. Prior informs Louis after his grandmother’s burial that he has AIDS, and Louis panics. He attempts to help Prior, but quickly realizes he can’t handle the stress and worry. Meanwhile, Roy Cohn, Joe’s right-wing, racist mentor and buddy, offers him a job in the Justice Department. However, Harper, who is addicted to Valium and suffers from anxiety and hallucinations, refuses to relocate to Washington.

Editor’s Picks

The fortunes of the two couples become entangled quickly: Joe comes upon Louis crying in the restroom of the courthouse where he works, and they form an odd relationship based in part on Louis’s hunch that Joe is gay. Harper and Prior also meet in a fanciful reciprocal dream scene in which Prior, acting on the “threshold of discovery,” reveals to Harper that her spouse is a gay man. Harper approaches Joe, who denies it but admits to struggling with the problem inside. Roy is surprised in a different way: During a visit to his doctor, Henry finds that he, too, has been diagnosed with AIDS. But Roy, who regards gay men as weak and ineffective, declares that he has nothing in common with them—AIDS is a homosexual sickness, whereas he has “liver cancer.” Disgusted, Henry urges him to utilize his influence to secure an experimental AIDS medication. Prior’s illness and Harper’s nightmares both worsen. Louis leaves Prior’s bedside at night to seek anonymous sex in Central Park. Prior, however, has a more dependable guardian in Belize, an ex drag queen, and a close friend. Prior tells Belize that he has been hearing a magnificent and strange voice; Belize is doubtful, but after he departs, we hear the voice talk to Prior, telling him that she is a messenger who would soon arrive for him. As time passes, Louis and Joe become closer, and the sexual undertones in their conversation become more apparent. Finally, Joe drunkenly calls his mother Hannah in Salt Lake City to inform her that he is gay, but Hannah tells him that he is being stupid. Nonetheless, she decides to sell her home and relocate to New York to set things right. In a dramatic and final scene, Joe tells Harper about his feelings, and she screams at him to leave, while Louis informs Prior that he is leaving.

Joe tells Louis he’s a Mormon on the same early January day. Belize informs Louis a few days later that Joe is Roy Cohn’s protégé. Prior collapses at the Mormon Visitors’ Center the same day, and Hannah rushes him to the hospital. Joe and Harper reunite for the time being. Louis confronts Joe about his relationship with Roy Cohn and his involvement in the crafting of unfair legal judgments; Joe punches Louis. Roy dies in the hospital later that night.

About the quiz

The Angel appears to Prior in the hospital late that night. Prior is advised by Hannah to wrestle the Angel for a blessing. Prior climbs the ladder to Heaven after the Angel reveals it. The Angel remains in the background to kiss Hannah. The following night, Belize summons Louis to the hospital; Louis is to conduct the Kaddish (Jewish mourning prayers) for Roy and steal Roy’s AZT. Prior meets with the angels in Heaven. Prior returns the book, rejects the prophecy, and requests a blessing, which is granted by the angels. It’s early dawn when Prior returns to his hospital bed. Hannah, Emily (another nurse), Belize, and Louis are all gathered around him.

Harper leaves Joe for real the next morning, and Louis tells Prior he loves him. Prior returns his love but refuses to reciprocate Louis. Harper is on her way to San Francisco. She receives a vision of the dead’s souls restoring the ozone layer.

Prior is at Central Park with Belize, Louis, and Hannah on a lovely winter day in January 1990. Prior informs the audience that he has been living with AIDS for the past five years. He blesses the audience with “More Life” and announces that “the Great Work Begins.”
