“Along for the Ride,” based on Sarah Dessen’s popular YA romance novel, tells us right away what we’re in for. Auden (played with quiet thoughtfulness by Emma Pasarow) is that serious high school senior who refuses to participate in the traditional graduation prank because she believes that “as a transgressive act, it’s faulty.” She’s never done anything wrong in her life; she’s the stereotypical good girl who got the honor role, a college scholarship, and admits she was “more interested in working hard so the rest of my life could be great.”

Editor’s Picks

With the summer ahead of her, Auden wonders if now is the time to see if she can start the great part. She has decided to stay with her father and stepmother in Colby, a beach town. She claims that at home, she can only be one type of person. “Perhaps I can be someone else if I go to Colby.” Also, you must try to play this Along For The Ride Movie Quiz.

If you’re hoping that instead, she’ll have to be more authentically herself, with help from a handsome teen boy and frequent micro-doses of what the closed captions call “melodic indie music,” you’ve come to the right place. Maybe not if you want more than the first verse of a song.

Auden acts as if it is Opposite Day at first, not thinking about what she wants but only about what she hasn’t done before. But then she meets the good girl’s version of the legendary “manic pixie dream girl,” which I’ll call the “soulful faun dream boy.” That’s Eli (Belmont Cameli, in a role modeled after John Cusack from “Say Anything,” Heath Ledger from “10 Things I Hate About You,” and Moondoggie from “Gidget”). He proposes taking her on a “quest” to catch up on all the silly fun her serious mother dismissed as a waste of time. He’s a bit of a loner, so she can help him reconnect with his friends. He is depressed, and she can make him talk about it. And they give each other the opportunity to tell stories and admit truths they haven’t even admitted to themselves.

About the quiz

Andie MacDowell as Auden’s mother, who arrives at the pastel-and-seashell beach community in very soigné black, gives the film a boost. “You’ll have to forgive me if I find it alarming how easily you’ve adapted to the world of your father’s new wife,” MacDowell says, still making it clear to us, if not Auden, that it’s less from snobbery and more from fear of losing her daughter as she leaves home for college.

Dessen, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Sofia Alvarez, demonstrates that it’s not just Eli who makes a difference for Auden. Auden’s developing friendship with the other girls who work at her stepmother’s boutique, played by Genevieve Hannelius, Laura Kariuki, and Samia Finnerty, is depicted in some of the film’s best scenes. While there are a few awkward transitions, Dessen gracefully avoids the all-too-common plot lines about mean girls or misunderstandings, and it is heartening to see smart, confident young women supporting each other—and enjoying goofy dance breaks. She also conveys a sense of community, connection, and tradition reminiscent of “Gilmore Girls'” Stars Hollow, as well as touches on the difficulties and importance of both helping and asking for help. Most importantly, Auden demonstrates that opening herself up to understanding her own feelings and taking risks allows her to gain new perspectives on those around her, particularly her parents and stepmother. She emerges not as someone else, but as a more authentic version of herself. The message may not be novel, but that doesn’t mean we don’t need to hear it.
