Grace Marks was given a life sentence in 1859 for her role in the killings of a wealthy man named Thomas Kinnear and his servant, Nancy Montgomery, and she has already served a significant portion of that sentence. Grace has established herself as a model inmate, and as a reward for her good conduct, the penitentiary’s governor has given Grace permission to spend her days working as a housekeeper in his own home under the supervision of his wife. The governor’s wife is a member of a group that promotes social change. Grace’s innocence is upheld by this group, which includes Reverend Verringer, and they have made several unsuccessful attempts to secure Grace’s pardon. However, when a doctor by the name of Simon Jordan travels to Kingston to work with her, interest in Grace’s case is rekindled.

Characters:

Grace Marks

the book’s main character. In the present of the book, Grace has spent years in jail after being found guilty of being an accessory to the killings of Mr. Thomas Kinnear and his housekeeper, Nancy Montgomery. Some people think Grace is innocent, while others think she’s either crazy or a criminal. Grace maintains she doesn’t recall the circumstances leading up to the killings.

Dr. Simon Jordan

a medical professional from the United States with a focus on neurological and cerebral disorders. Dr. Jordan is a medical doctor by training, but he now focuses on studying mental illness in order to create his own asylum and make contributions to the developing discipline of psychology. He travels to Canada to speak with Grace in hopes of retrieving her forgotten memories and advancing his theory of the mind.

Mary Whitney

Best companion and confidant of Grace. When Grace first moved into the Alderman Parkinson home, Mary, the housekeeper, immediately grew to be a close companion and substitute mother. Being frank by nature, Mary frequently expressed her disapproval of the upper classes’ ineptitude and the status of women in society. She felt that with determination and hard effort, she could free herself from servitude. After trying to get an abortion, Mary passed away.

Mr. Thomas Kinnear

a wealthy bachelor from Scotland. Grace worked for Mr. Kinnear most recently. Although he was courteous to Grace, the residents of Richmond Hill had a disapproving suspicion that he was having an affair with his housekeeper, Nancy Montgomery.
