The film’s title is “A Journal for Jordan,” but, like the book on which it is based, it is really two journals kept by both parents of a baby whose father would only meet him once before being killed in Iraq. It’s the story of an unlikely romance between two very different people, as well as the eternal bond that they both wanted their son to understand.

Editor’s Picks

Dana Canedy, a New York Times reporter, and editor was pregnant when her fiancé, First Sgt. Charles Monroe King was deployed to Iraq. She gave him a journal, which became a haven for him, a safe place to connect with his family at the end of the day. As he witnessed young men being killed in action, he wrote more than 200 pages about what he had learned about life and being a man, as well as his hopes for his son. He talked about everything from how to treat women with respect to not be ashamed to cry. “Crying can help to relieve a lot of pain and stress.” It has nothing to do with your masculinity.”

Canedy wrote a best-seller after King’s death, incorporating excerpts from the journal, to tell Jordan the story of his father and their time together. Each chapter begins with a letter addressed to Jordan: “Dear Jordan.”

Dana (Chanté Adams) is first seen at work, fiercely independent, angry at an editor who wants to add another reporter to her story, and then irritated when the colleague who is trying to be assigned to her story points out that her breast milk has leaked through to her blouse. She is still nursing, and it is past time for her to pump. Also, you must try to play this A Journal For Jordan Quiz.

Then we flashback to her first encounter with Charles (Michael B. Jordan), in the living room of the house she grew up in, where he is hanging a painting he created as a gift for her father. She is instantly drawn to him and fabricates a story about needing a ride to spend time with him. They don’t appear to share much in common. She is a high-strung, highly verbal woman who works for a New York City newspaper. He is a quiet man, divorced with a daughter, who gets his news from TV and has never visited Manhattan. She has seen Army wives sacrifice their careers to follow their husbands from one assignment to the next as the daughter of a career military man. He is closer to her father than she is to her mother. He arrives on the dot of o-nine-hundred, as promised, the day after they meet, but she has overslept.

About the quiz

She is hesitant to become involved with him. However, once she returns to New York, they begin having lengthy phone conversations. He pays us a visit. She tells him he has to sleep on the couch, which he does… initially.

Perhaps because of the time jumps, director Denzel Washington avoids fussy cinematic flourishes, though in one scene, as they talk on the phone while lying down, we see their faces sideways, an odd distraction. Washington, on the other hand, wisely keeps the actors at the center of the story. On-screen, Adams and Jordan have a warm, engaging connection, and their romance develops with a surprising but welcome touch of humor.

As the story progresses, we see Dana and her middle-school-aged son, how her time with Charles shaped her as a mother, and how she uses the journal to share Charles with the son he was writing to half a world away. In a moving conclusion, we see how those lessons influenced Jordan’s own sense of commitment and honor.

“Jordan’s Journal” is a love story. It’s about an unlikely romance, a distant father, a single mother, and how love connects them even after a loss. It wears its heart on its sleeve, as genuine and unpretentious as a homemade valentine.
