You know what they say about pirates: the real treasure isn’t always the plunder, but the people you meet along the way.
That old adage takes on unexpected poignancy in the season finale of HBO Max’s ridiculously delightful pirate comedy Our Flag Means Death. The swashbuckling series is loosely based on the real-life adventures of Stede Bonnet (played by Rhys Darby from Flight of the Conchords), an 18th-century aristocrat who left his privileged upbringing to seek adventure on the high seas. Along the way, the inexperienced “Gentleman Pirate” meets Edward Teach, better known as the fearsome Blackbeard (Taika Waititi).
Our Flag Means Death appears to be a silly farce, a workplace comedy about the trials and tribulations of life at sea. However, like any good sailor, the show ventures beyond the shallows and into unexpected depths. Our Flag Means Death has some of the most delightful queer representation on television right now, and the show has depicted openly gay characters (such as Nathan Foad’s Lucius) and nonbinary characters (such as Vico Ortiz’s Jim) with a refreshing depth and sincerity. But the show’s emotional center has always been Stede and Blackbeard’s relationship. Throughout the series’ ten episodes, viewers have seen the two pirates grow to respect and eventually love each other. (While Stede instructs Blackbeard on which fork to use at dinner, Blackbeard instructs Stede on how to survive a sword to the gut.) In episode 9, the two pirates finally admit their romantic feelings for each other by sharing a tender beachside kiss.
Stede and Blackbeard’s romance was always part of show creator David Jenkins’ initial pitch for the series — and one of the things he and the writers found most creatively fulfilling.
“[Stede and Blackbeard’s relationship] is the reason I made the show,” Jenkins says. “When Taika and I first discussed it, he said, ‘Oh yeah, that’s the show.’ I first learned about Stede and how he befriended Blackbeard for unknown reasons. ‘Oh, it’s a romance,’ I thought quickly.”
Waititi concurs, but the actor (who also directed the first episode and serves as an EP) jokes that Jenkins had a hidden agenda.
“David just wants to irritate homophobic historians,” Waititi laughs. “All he wants to hear is, ‘That never happened!'”

Jenkins describes the show as a “rom-com,” eager to explore how two very different people could find comfort and fulfillment in each other. Darby and Waititi, who have been friends and collaborators for over a decade, were drawn to the opposites-attract energy as well.
Waititi explains, “It all stems from this mutual interest and fascination with one another.” “Blackbeard has seen it all, and he sees this guy who has sacrificed everything to become a pirate, despite knowing nothing about the ocean life. It takes a lot of guts to give up your life — your comfortable life where you’re extremely wealthy — and instead venture out into these dangerous situations. That would be considered very crazy and adventurous by Blackbeard. He’s looking for new experiences in his life because he’s seen everything.”
“For me, Stede is figuring out what he’s looking for,” Darby says. “It’s not just about adventure; it’s about feeling something. That’s what he lacked back home, with his marital status and his wife, who was chosen for him, as is customary in aristocracy. He had such a simple life, but it was devoid of emotion. That’s why he embarked on this adventure, and he immediately discovered feelings.”
“I think you’re always fascinated by what’s different from yourself,” Waititi continues. “I’m not interested in going out with myself. I am drawn to people who surprise me and from whom I can learn. It all starts with these two: they learn from each other, then they learn about each other.”
