Susanne (Almudena Amor), a twenty-five-year-old publicity model in Paris, lives a stylish life. She receives a phone call one evening, just as she is about to start a new job, informing her that her grandmother Pilar (Vera Valdez) has suffered a brain hemorrhage. Pilar’s only living relative, her parents had died in a car accident years before. She is urged to return to her hometown of Madrid in order to care for the elderly lady, who has been left completely silent and unable to care for herself. Despite being told that her condition is irreversible, Susanne feeds, washes, and attempts to communicate with her grandmother. Caring for someone in this condition is neither easy nor pleasant. The visuals and the pace of the narrative are perfectly balanced. Slowly but steadily, the genre devices accumulate. The film borrows a few clever ruses from the horror classic The Skeleton Key (Iain Softley, 2005), except Kolokolchykova is far less talkative than Gena Rowlands’ character. The ending is wonderfully extravagant, with a fantastic twist that will force you to revisit the film and put the puzzle pieces together as you walk home from the theater. The Grandmother had its world premiere at the 69th San Sebastian International Film Festival in the Official Competition. It’s unusual for such A-category festivals to select horror films, especially for their most prestigious section. This finely crafted Spanish-French co-production, on the other hand, is a welcome addition to their lineup.
The BFI London Film Festival will host the UK premiere in October.
