Susanne (Almudena Amor), a twenty-five-year-old publicity model in Paris, lives a stylish life. She receives a phone call one evening, just as she is about to start a new job, informing her that her grandmother Pilar (Vera Valdez) has suffered a brain hemorrhage. Pilar’s only living relative, her parents had died in a car accident years before. She is urged to return to her hometown of Madrid in order to care for the elderly lady, who has been left completely silent and unable to care for herself. Despite being told that her condition is irreversible, Susanne feeds, washes, and attempts to communicate with her grandmother. Caring for someone in this condition is neither easy nor pleasant. Susanne’s life has abruptly shifted from glitz to gloom.

Editor’s Picks

Pilar’s appearance is the stuff of nightmares: her body is scrawny and wrinkly, her face demonic, with pearly black eyes, shrunken lips, and a mouth that is almost always open. Her eyes are completely vacant. “You are no longer there, are you?” a frustrated Susanne asks. The old lazy, on the other hand, walks around the house unaided, frequently appearing in unexpected places. Also, you will find out which La Abuela character are you in this quiz.

The Grandmother Quiz

Pilar had a hedonistic youth, and she was just as fashionable as her granddaughter, according to short flashbacks and portraits on the walls. Susanne discovers her childhood diary, which contains disturbing drawings. Eva (Karina Kolokolchykova), a neighbor, reveals that their grandmothers were best friends and that they (Eva and Susanne) used to play together as children. Susanne has no recollection of anything like this. Strange little events bordering on the paranormal begin to occur gradually: a door mysteriously closes, lights flicker, and grandma is magically transported from one room to the next. Susanne has terrifying nightmares that eventually become reality. As a result, she begins to question her own mental health. Also, you must try to play this The Grandmother quiz.

The visuals and the pace of the narrative are perfectly balanced. Slowly but steadily, the genre devices accumulate. The film borrows a few clever ruses from the horror classic The Skeleton Key (Iain Softley, 2005), except Kolokolchykova is far less talkative than Gena Rowlands’ character. The ending is wonderfully extravagant, with a fantastic twist that will force you to revisit the film and put the puzzle pieces together as you walk home from the theater. Like any good horror film with a good script should.

About the quiz

Paco Plaza is best known for his three [Rec] films (2007, 2009, and 2012), which he wrote and co-directed. With the commercial hit Veronica (2017), he continued to hone his horror skills, and he has now injected more flare and subtleties into the genre, with this highly effective film guaranteed to please his fans and convert new enthusiasts.

The Grandmother had its world premiere at the 69th San Sebastian International Film Festival in the Official Competition. It’s unusual for such A-category festivals to select horror films, especially for their most prestigious section. This finely crafted Spanish-French co-production, on the other hand, is a welcome addition to their lineup.

The BFI London Film Festival will host the UK premiere in October.
