According to a study published in the journal Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, there are ten healthy personality qualities that are essential for your mental health. The first of three studies asked 137 trait psychology experts to characterize their view of a psychologically fit person using the NEO Psychological Inventory, Revised, which categorizes 240 items into 30 smaller personality traits. This inventory is also a more in-depth version of the NEO-Five-Factor Inventory, which looks at a person’s Big Five personality traits. Also, you must try to play this How Healthy Are You Quiz.

According to Katy Caselli, an organizational psychologist who specializes in psychological frameworks, the Big Five has become a prominent personality indicator that may “be used for people to learn about themselves and their abilities, or it can be utilized by businesses to forecast success.” The Big Five quiz (here’s a free one you can take online) consists of a series of questions to which you can react with a variety of answers ranging from “strongly disagree” to “strongly agree.” Based on your responses, you’ll learn where you fall on a scale of zero to 100 for the Big Five personality traits:

  • receptivity to new experiences
  • Conscientiousness
  • Extraversion
  • Agreeableness
  • Neuroticism

Importantly, the Big Five exam will not tell you if you are extraverted or not. Instead, it will tell you if you have a low extraversion score. With this scale in mind, the researchers researching healthy personality traits targeted definitions of what defines a “healthy personality” based on levels of specific attributes, many of which are linked to the Big Five.

“Healthy personality functioning can be best described by high levels of openness to feelings, pleasant emotions, and straightforwardness, and low levels on all elements of neuroticism,” according to the paper. In Scientific American, psychologist Scott Barry Kaufman, Ph.D., identifies ten distinct personality traits (to see where you fall on the scale, you can take an online test created by Dr. Kaufman).

About the quiz

  • Feelings openness
  • Simpleness of expression (and being “frank, sincere, and ingenuous”)
  • Competence
  • heaviness (being affectionate and friendly)
  • Positive feelings (experiencing “joy, happiness, love, and excitement”)
  • A low amount of enraged hostility
  • Low levels of anxiety (not being “shy, fearful, nervous, tensed, and restless”)
  • Low levels of depression
  • Low susceptibility to stress
  • Low impulsiveness (being able to control cravings and urges)
  • Influencing Factors on Healthy Personality Traits
  • Dr. Kaufman is quick to stress out that you don’t have to have all of those personality traits to live a good life. Rather, he writes, “the essential judgment [for psychological health] is the amount to which poor scores on this profile prevent you from achieving your particular goals.”

The researchers matched these feature profiles to over 3,000 students in two further studies and discovered that the attributes were connected with more life satisfaction, more self-esteem, self-sufficiency, being more optimistic, having less anger and aggression, and having more self-control. But what can you do if you don’t naturally excel at these traits?

The good news is that no matter what your innate personality makeup is, you are not bound to live a life devoid of beneficial personality qualities. You may be able to intentionally modify aspects of your personality over time to better coincide with your goals. For example, if you can recognize that you are emotionally locked off, you can be more careful of opening up to vulnerabilities in the future. While you should never modify your natural tendencies (these are what make you, you! ), being aware of where you land on the scale of healthy personality traits might help you, well, level up how mentally healthy you can be.
