On a cold Christmas Eve, a mean-spirited, miserly old man named Ebenezer Scrooge sits in his counting-house. Because Scrooge refuses to spend money on heating coals for a fire, his clerk, Bob Cratchit, shivers in the anteroom. Fred, Scrooge’s nephew, pays him a visit and asks him to his annual Christmas party. Two portly gentlemen also pay Scrooge a visit and ask for a donation to their charity. Scrooge reacts angrily to the holiday visitors, spitting out an angry “Bah! Humbug!” in response to his nephew’s “Merry Christmas!”

Later that evening, after returning to his dark, chilly apartment, Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his deceased business partner, Jacob Marley. Marley tells his tragic narrative, appearing worn and white. As a punishment for his greedy and self-serving life, his spirit has been cursed to walk the Earth chained. Marley wishes to spare Scrooge from the same fate. Marley informs Scrooge that he would be visited by three spirits on each of the next three evenings. He awakens just as the Ghost of Christmas Past, a bizarre childlike ghost with a brightly lighted head, arrives. The ghost takes Scrooge on a voyage back in time to earlier Christmases in the curmudgeon’s life. Scrooge revisits his youth school days, his apprenticeship with a merry businessman named Fezziwig, and his engagement to Belle, a woman who leaves Scrooge because his hunger for money outweighs his ability to love another. Before the phantom returns Scrooge to his bed, he sheds tears of regret.

The Ghost of Christmas Present, a majestic giant dressed in a green fur robe, guides Scrooge across London, revealing Christmas as it will occur that year. Scrooge observes the huge, active Cratchit family as they prepare a tiny feast in their modest home. Tiny Tim, Bob Cratchit’s disabled son, is a brave youngster whose kindness and humility warm Scrooge’s heart. The specter then whisks Scrooge away to his nephew’s house to attend the Christmas festivities. Scrooge enjoys the joyous gathering and begs the spirit to stay until the end of the festivities. The spirit ages over the day, becoming considerably older. He shows Scrooge two starving children, Ignorance and Want, who are living under his coat near the end of the day. He vanishes as Scrooge senses a dark, hooded creature approaching him.

The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come to guides Scrooge through a series of puzzling episodes linked to the recent death of a nameless man. Scrooge witnesses merchants discussing the dead man’s wealth, vagabonds bartering his personal things for money, and an impoverished couple expressing relief at the death of their harsh creditor. Scrooge, eager to learn the lesson of his latest visitor, requests the name of the deceased. Scrooge finds himself in a churchyard after pleading with the ghost, the apparition pointing to a grave. When Scrooge looks at the headstone, he is surprised to see his own name. He begs the spirit to change his fate, promising to change his heartless, avaricious ways and to honor Christmas with all his heart. Whoosh! He finds himself safely nestled into his bed.

Scrooge runs out onto the street, overjoyed at the chance to redeem himself and happy that he has been returned to Christmas Day, wanting to share his newfound Christmas spirit. To the great amazement of the other guests, he delivers a massive Christmas turkey to the Cratchit residence and attends Fred’s party. As the year’s pass, he keeps his promise and celebrates Christmas with zeal: he cherishes Tiny Tim as if he were his own kid, lavishes gifts on the impoverished, and treats his fellow humans with kindness, generosity, and warmth.
