Everyone has that summer they remember fondly, whether it’s a summer romantic fling, a wonderful vacation overseas, or a beautifully quiet time with pals at home. This concept eventually becomes the central pillar for which the Spanish film Outlaws (also known as Laws of the Border) tells its story. Outlaws is a loud, delightful good time with an authentic 1970s ambiance, engaging characters, and a rather compelling tale.

Ignacio Canas, a 17-year-old boy, is at the core of this film. This lone youngster is continuously tormented by his classmates and finds himself an outcast within his own family.

Nacho meets Zarco and Tere while working at an arcade during the summer of 1978. These two teenage criminals are from the city’s Chinatown. The art department is responsible for some of the outstanding work done here. The realistic 1970s designs, right down to news bulletins, clothes, and overall attitudes of the day, are fairly accurate, and it’s easy to become lost in this world.

Similarly, the performance of everyone involved is excellent, and every one of the key cast members has a natural relationship with one another. The trio in the forefront, Nacho, Zarco, and Tere, are the major fuel that keeps everything together, but the supporting characters do plenty to keep you interested in their stories as well.

Outlaws, adapted from Javier Cercas’ 2012 novel of the same name, is unmistakably a reference to the ancient quinquina era of cinema. For those who are unaware, these films, which focused on delinquents and youthful love, became popular at the end of the 1970s and early 1980s. Consider the chemistry between characters in American Graffiti for a more US-centric reference.

Outlaws’ first half bears the closest resemblance to this film, spending its time getting to know all of these characters and fleshing out their backstories. There’s also a lovely relationship between Tere and Nacho, which is hampered by Zarco’s presence. While not an obvious love triangle, this novel does a good job of building tension and drama without devolving into melodrama.
