Randy, a character in Wes Craven’s extremely successful film Scream, observes that there are some rules that must be followed in order to survive a horror film. Following an analysis of the narratives of some of the most popular films in this genre, it appears that beloved Randy was correct. There are a few actions, situations, and expressions that portend inevitable calamity. I frequently wonder if I would be able to survive in a horror film. If you’ve been wondering the same thing, here are the five rules I’ve concluded we’ll need to follow if we want to survive.

Editor’s Picks

Rule One: You must be a virgin.
You must not only be a virgin, but it is preferable if you are a female virgin. I’ve noticed that at least one survivor in most horror films is a female virgin. That is how the phrase “last girl” came to be. It is usually up to the film’s single female virgin to fight the “bad guy” and save herself and potentially other characters. So, if you want to live, either by her or find the last girl and cling to her like glue! (I think the idea of having to be “pure” in order to survive ludicrously!) Survival, in my opinion, should be determined by how resourceful, tenacious, brave, and tough you are.) This trope, or a variation on it, can be found in A Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, The Ring, and The Wolfman.

Rule number two: Never, ever, ever say the phrase “I’ll be right back.”
You will not, in fact, be returning soon. Whatever character unlucky enough to use this sentence for any reason during a horror film will inevitably die soon after. Avoid this phrase like the plague if you’re in a horror movie. Do you still not believe me? See a number of Saw films, as well as Pumpkin Karver. Rule three: Never work as a cop or in any other sort of law enforcement.
It is extremely common for police officers to perish in a horrific accident. This is especially true if the cop is attempting to assist the main character (s). Any police officer who believes a scream for aid is doomed. (With the exception of the fourth film, the Scream franchise is a significant exception to this cliché.) Learn from the examples of late law enforcement officers in films such as Child’s Play, Misery, and Silent Hill.

About the quiz

Rule Four: Do not go to Elm Street, quiet villages in New York or Maine, lakes, eerie old mansions, or summer camps for whatever reason.
If you avoid these areas, your chances of survival increase enormously. (Examples are unneeded because this short list covers nearly every horror film.)

Rule 5: Do not drink, take recreational drugs, or engage in any activity that could be called a “sin.”
In horror films, these things denote inevitable and quick death. Characters that engage in these acts are frequently among the first to be slain. This is, in reality, an extension of the first rule. You must be as pure as possible if you wish to survive. It’s a manner of defining good vs evil in the context of a horror film. The “bad man” clearly portrays evil, while the “ultimate girl” represents good triumphing over evil. (As with the first guideline, the idea of needing to be pure is greatly exaggerated. It would be great to see more films in which the underdog or bad boy/girl is the hero.) Some famous examples of this trope can be seen in any of the Friday the 13th films, as well as Flatliners and Scream 4.
