Your Place Or Mine Quiz

“Your Place or Mine” starts in 2003, and it feels like the kind of superficially appealing but quickly forgotten romantic comedy that was popular at the time.

The following films have found fresh life in heavy rotation on the DryBar monitors: “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” “The Holiday,” and “Something’s Gotta Give.” You can watch them while getting a blowout and sipping a complimentary glass of champagne before a ladies’ night out.

“Your Place or Mine” represents the feature directorial debut of longtime writer Aline Brosh McKenna, whose credits include “27 Dresses,” another aughts rom-com staple. McKenna also wrote “The Devil Wears Prada,” a far better Oscar nominee. Her most recent picture never approaches those heights in terms of sharp dialogue or richly drawn characters, but it also doesn’t aspire that high. Rather, “Your Place or Mine” appears satisfied with being pleasant, which may be enough for a lazy Saturday Netflix watch.

Editor’s Picks

The problem is that we know the actors in the picture are capable of so much more. Of course, Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher are both attractive and charismatic, and they still have flawless comic timing after all these years. It’s frustrating to watch them attempt to make this safe, bland material sing.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Your Place Or Mine quiz.

Debbie and Peter, played by Witherspoon and Kutcher, met 20 years ago and have been closest friends ever since. We know they’re best friends because they keep telling us so, but their conversations never communicate the comfort or substance of such a vital, two-decade bond. Even though they live across the country, they speak every day in some form, and while their talks are light, they lack a genuine spark.

McKenna rapidly establishes their polarity through the use of genre tropes. Debbie lives in a cluttered and colorful Los Angeles Craftsman, while Peter lives in a sleek and spacious Brooklyn apartment with views of the Brooklyn Bridge. (The backgrounds are extremely green-screeny.) He’s a sardonic charmer with commitment problems; she’s a perky and uptight single mom. He walks through the bustling city streets, while she goes through a quiet, leafy area. They’re so dissimilar! Could they ever get together?

McKenna’s screenplay, however, keeps them physically apart for the vast majority of the film, as a series of plot twists forces them to trade homes for a week. Debbie moves into Peter’s apartment while completing some professional training in Manhattan; in the meantime, Peter accepts to reside in Debbie’s home to care for her sweet and shy 13-year-old son, Jack. (Wesley Kimmel). He arrives to a slew of worried Post-It notes all over the place, and she can’t get his high-tech entertainment system to stop playing tracks by Peter’s favorite band, The Cars. It’s crazy! (Name a Cars song, and it’ll be in this movie, including “Drive” while Peter is… driving.)

Each location has a witty sidekick who is far more interesting than the primary character. Peter meets Debbie’s middle school coworker, portrayed by a delightfully dry Tig Notaro. Debbie unexpectedly befriends Peter’s preening party girl ex-girlfriend, portrayed by Zoe Chao. Her snarky, sly delivery is entertaining, but this character appears to have no existence outside of showing up and supporting a woman she just met.

Other supporting characters include Steve Zahn as Debbie’s gardener and the would-be suitor whose name is Zen, and Jesse Williams as a handsome and successful New York book editor with whom she flirts. Both appear to be afterthoughts and undeveloped barriers.

About the quiz

Will Debbie let her hair down in New York? Will Peter be able to find security in Los Angeles? And will each discover in the other an affection that was always there? The answers to these queries are clear, with the exception of a brief, forced fight because there must be some kind of conflict. There’s nothing complicated about these individuals or these scenarios that would cast doubt on their fates. When it comes to romantic comedies, the journey is always more essential than the destination, but there’s scarcely a twist, detour, or even a pothole in the road to make this journey more interesting.
