Steven Universe is a storytelling tremendous feat. At once, it makes balancing all these plates positively easy. A future story, an interstellar fantasy, a drama for families, and really hilarious enjoyment of the entire age. Steven himself, a hero whose heroism is built-in compassion, readiness to change, and an unshakeable sense of what is right, is centering on everything. He is a boy who complains that his favorite new ice cream, the heir to an Empire spanning the world and the only person in the world capable of correcting thousands of years of mistake, has been discontinued. In the past, untold years, the culture of Gem as fans would know it was created. Details are small, but the White Diamond is likely first to rise from the Cosmic abyss, the despot in the Homeworld and in the Gem huge empire. A little later came the Great Diamond Authority into being Yellow Diamond, Blue Diamond, and Pink Diamond.

This era is known as era 1. These four diamonds may have quarreled Pink, as the youngest one, but their authority was as steady as ever. They were particularly temperamentally prone, but they were uncontaminated. Colonization was the order of the day, the Gem-controlled worlds were overcome and demolished to generate ever more Gems. While the first episode has a lot to do (we have written about that here), particularly the Cookie Cat song, I feel that episode two has the Mission Declaration for the show (and is later proven in the fifth season). It’s foreseen at the start as Steven requests for fries bits enthusiastically. He doesn’t want all the fries, and he wants only ‘the parts’ He wants them. At first glance, it seems just like a nice statement, but when you see the entire series it takes on a different meaning. It doesn’t fit in a specific shape (such as fried parts) yet is nonetheless valuable.

It never dives into darkness and seriousness fully, but it really employs humor to make it even macabre. The show can get pretty heavy sometimes, yet it never loses its mood. It’s not a dull and chilly planet with the sense of humor of Steven in particular.
Although Steven Universe has so early revealed the goal statement of the show, it explores many of its seeming ‘filler’ events. Connie (the best friend of Steven’s) parents wish to meet Steven’s parents in this episode. The single issue? Connie did not want to lie or upset, he fused into Alexandria Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl and took her to Greg for dinner.
