At the end of Jerry Spinelli’s acclaimed YA novel “Stargirl,” there are no tidy endings. The book 2000 describes the changes that follow the coming of the Stargirl, a completely unusual youngster from the Arizona High School that pushes everyone around her to realize their own self. While the exuberant energy of Stargirl —and her commitment to enjoying an otherwise boring suburban school— delights her students initially (particularly Leo Borlock), tides are turning as students return to their ancient conformity attachment. By the end of the book, Stargirl was temporarily shunned, reaccepted, and cast out once more. Then something even more horrific happens: a wrathful classmate slaps her in a particularly fragrant school dance before the whole student body.

Regisseur Juliet Hart was cautious of finishing her Disney+ in a horribly sad spot for the filmmaking version of the novel (together with her husband and co-writer Jordan Horowitz). Yes, after several painful incidents, her Stargirl (played by Grace VanderWaal) continues to depart Mica, with an unsatisfactory attempt to ‘be average’ (she even comes back to her real name, Susan), but Hart would not end up with something so terrible as a bodily distortion.

This does not just make Stargirl standing out because of its colorful and accessory-laden ensembles. She is rebellious, certainly, but her motivation is friendliness, compassion, and empathy. First Leo encounters Stargirl on the ukulele at the center of the cafeteria when she performs “Happy Birthday.” He struck very immediately, and Stargirl trains Leo to be a bit more daring. Soon she will also be touching other lives, revitalizing the football team by writing a song and giving a bike from a dance shop to a child who has recently been in an accident.
About the quiz
Stargirl apparently arrives out of nowhere in the story. She causes the entire Mica high school to soon fall in love with her and Leo (Graham Verchere). She takes a boring village where nothing occurs and sprinkles her glitter and tapes and has everyone name her their charm of good luck. In her half-time football games, she joins the cheerleading group and plays her ukulele, leading the team to enjoy their finest season in the history of the school.
A player from the opposite group is hurt and Stargirl is running to help him during the State football championship game. She departs in the ambulance with him, and the Mica High squad is disintegrating. Leo urges her that she must just be regular and blend in. The school blames her. She tries, she even takes Susan’s birth name but knows that she can’t. She is Stargirl.
The surprise ends up luring him into the stage and singing The Cars “Just What I need,” which turns into high school music final for the dance, and then Stargirl disappears.
As smoothly as she came, Stargirl disappears from Mica. On people’s birthdays (so she can offer gifts) in the office Leo finds all Stargirl’s notes and the place where everybody in town has been. Maybe she only started that year at Mica High, but she has always been there at home. Thus Leo’s neckties were every year presents from her far before he realized she existed on his birthday.
