“Ice Age” is a pleasure and a little less pleasant to look at. I came to scoff and kept smiling. A wooly mammoth, a Sabroot tiger, and a sloth team have inspired me, I admit, to rescue a baby humanly and restore them to its parents. Uh, eh, eh. Oh, eh. But the screenplay by Peter Ackerman is erudite and so distinctive and engaging is the visual style of director Chris Wedge that it seduced me.
During a large ice age, the film takes place during a species movement in the south. Such migration had happened for thousands of years and for the winter months was not the pre-Cambrian counterpart of Florida, but nevertheless: The animals retreat as the ice packs move. No time can be lost. Their parents are persuaded to hurry up by baby mammoths playing in the tar pit, “You could later play the extinction.” We meet Manfred the Mammoth and Sid the Sloth, spoken by Ray Romano (voiced by John Leguizamo). They can talk, of course. (The people who have not grasped the language yet, they believe.)

The Earth’s menagerie of beings unites itself on a pilgrimage to the South in order to avoid the dangers of the coming Ice era 20000 years ago. Some mavericks choose to follow their own path. Manfred is a woolly man who chooses loneliness than march with the people. Ray Romano is spoken of by Manfred. Obviously, destiny brings him along with Sid, a wavering sloth, whose family has abandoned him. To teach him a spiritual lesson. He received an animated short Oscar for Bunny. All this comedy works from the magnificent characters to the wacky antiques of a highly agitated mother nature that is exploding in volcano eruptions, avalanches, hurricanes, and other disasters. When Manfred and Sid come on a mission to return the boy to his tribe with the abandoned human baby, their motherly instincts come to the fore.

Through an enemy who has an egoistic interest in escorting him. Then the large lug slowly begins, over time, to attach itself to the guide. And creates momentum over the expected partition.
This, in a word, is the template for the two blockbusters, Monsters, Inc., and Shrek, which animated their computers from last year, and it now applies to Ice Age, Chris Wedge’s, the first feature film from the Blue-Sky studio’s acquisition in 20th century Fox (who also made the animated short Bunny Oscar winner for Wedge).
There are no resemblances between the three flicks. Big-Lug Manfred and Fast-talk-Sidekick share the same Meet Cute – and the same disturbing relationship – as Shrek or Donkey, both Shrek’s equivalents. Then, Sid of the sloth (Ray Romano and John Leguizamo respectively).
In both movies, Big Lug is not trying to save Fast-Talking Sidekick and certainly doesn’t want a companion to saddle, but Sidekick is proving hard to get rid of. Take Ice Age’s statement, which might have been just as easily penned for Shrek: “No ‘we’ exists. No ‘we’ have ever been there. There wouldn’t be a ‘you without me, in fact.’ “
The heroes’ task in Shrek was to fetch the villain a child (Princess Fiona) (Lord Farquaad). Also, in the ice age, it’s a child that the heroes try to come back to their family, just like in Monsters, Inc.
