It’s been done again by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. The filmmakers of American history, who took on the highest levels in projects such as “Baseball,” the “Vietnam War” and the “Civil War,” come back to PBS tonight with a three-part series on the life and the impact of Ernest Hemingway, one of the most important authors in the 20th century.
They mix expert interviews, images in archives, and in particular, the writing of a guy who gives his name to the series according to the manner of their past products. For six hours now, Burns, Novick, and ordinary writer Geoffrey C. Ward (winner of five projects in Emmys for Burns) are not just offering a chronological bio of Hemingway. They don’t worry about attacking the wrong side and claims of misogyny and racism which lead, for a very long time, to a 3D portrait of an icon of the 20th century.
The key to “Hemingwaysuccess “‘s is to ensure that its creators and speakers don’t just bow down at the altar to some of his really amazing writings, that they bring experts together to explain how Hemingway rewrote the literary rulebook, always maintaining a sharp balance between analysis of his work and how the work emerged out of his personal lives and interests. The location in Hemingway’s early fiction is the North Michigan forests. Nick Adams is a girl named Marjorie, who is a young man now. The story is not only about “the end of something,” but about the end of three things: the end of the logging heydays, the end of the mill town on the bay of Horton, and the end of a romance between the two.
Also, Hortons Bay is no longer an entertaining, fun place: it has been taken from its large scrolls, rollers, belts, and squirrels. The one time busy, whole-life town little resembles what remains. Then, nothing can recall what it used to be to a stranger. Marjorie points out the destruction of the mold and compares it poetically to a fortress. Nick doesn’t say anything about Marjorie’s romantic counterpart.
The context described by Hemingway proves that the finale was in fact an end – and time to move forward – when Hortons Bay ceased its boisterous, financially successful years because the way of life the town’s residents took for granted had disappeared. It must have been a frightening disclosure.
It will also be the “end of something,” yet it’s also not the end of something big for Nick to stop his romantical connection with Marjorie. It’s just the conclusion of a stale relationship, that’s not pleasurable anymore.

Marjorie often arranged for them to eat picnic dinners by campfires in the evening. After Labor Day, when Marjorie’s summer work ended, Hemingway started dating another person. The fictional “Bill” in the novel certainly was based on Bill Smith, Hemingway’s good buddy who spent the summer with Hemingway.
