William Hartnell played the First Doctor till 1966 when Time Lords demonstrated their ability to regenerate when they were close to death. This premiere involves not just the beginning of a new season but the return of the newest Doctor, performed by Peter Capaldi, one of his generation’s great actors and one who originally seemed a definitely strange choice for his role. Men of Capaldi’s age – 56 — were previously the Doctor.
