It is difficult to pull the series finals off. Look at Seinfeld, a sitcom that has made me angry for the previous 20 years with a divisive episode. In the last chapters, all of the loose ends have to be tied and they must bring the humorous in the case of sitcoms. After 11 seasons and 275 episodes, Cheers shut out the lights on 20 May 1993 with a 3-part spectacle, which has been seen by 80,4 million people. The end of Cheers is nearly flawless. Furthermore, it’s largest, and I’ll just remark that its triple length is the sole failure. It’s a much too long episode, but I think that it won the overall bye-book with the show of three presidents. You raise the bar higher than ever before for networks sitcoms, you get a lenient final.
Lives were seldom at risk, but reputation was — and generally the reputation of a personality inside Cheers’ Insular Gang.
