An afterlife is a strange place for Yuzuru Otonashi. Yuri Nakamura, a local high school student, approaches him and discusses the afterlife. Before rebirth, all of those transported to limbo are young souls who have endured tragedy and tribulations while alive. Reincarnation, or “obliteration”, is the process of learning to accept one’s situation by leading a typical high school life, such as attending class and participating in numerous extracurricular activities.
Student council president Angel, a mystery figure at the school, enforces these regulations even more strictly. Yuri refers to these manufactured characters as “Non-Player Characters” in order to assist the humans in obliterating themselves (NPCs).
In no time, Otonashi learns that Yuri is the founder and leader of the Shinda Sekai Sensen (SSS), a group that refuses to accept obliteration and fights against God for their harsh circumstances in life. Angel, whom the SSS believes to be affiliated with God, fights back against the gang by using computer software called Angel Player, which gives her several defensive mechanisms, including arm blades called “Hand Sonics” and superhuman power.

In addition to Yuri, Otonashi meets Hideki Hinata, the organization’s co-founder; Masami Iwasawa, a brilliant pianist; and Yui, a junior in high school. Girls Dead Monster (GDM), Iwasawa’s four-girl rock band, is also a member of the SSS, as is the Guild, a group of weapon manufacturers who operate underground, out of Angel’s sight.
