Furries — persons who have an interest in anthropomorphic animals like Sonic the Hedgehog or Pokémon — have come from users on sites such as Something Awful and 4chan for a lot of derision over the years. Mainstream media stories prefer to portray furries as sexual fetishists who gather in animal costumes by a common interest in sex.
But research indicates that many of these stereotypes are mistaken (very few furries think sex in animal costumes is a good idea, for instance). Here is a little guide to the furry community, which will perhaps resolve some of this incomprehension.

A 2007 survey indicated that just 26.4% of the respondents to a furry event had a fur costume and 30% had a fursuit. In a study in 2014, the fursuit component of the tail was determined to be the most frequent, with 48,1 percent of Furry Fiesta 2014 respondents reporting having a tail. It is reported that only 13 percent have a full outfit, while 34.3 percent have used any clothing or accessories related to the fursona (more on that in a sec). No, but, there are sexual issues, as there are with any other fan interest (video games, comics, etc.). While sexual behavior (called “yiffing” after sexual sound foxes) for certain people belongs to the subculture, others are not erotic about that issue.
In the media, furries tend to accentuate the fandom’s sexual side over heavily, such as this 30 rock bit:
Furry Boing Boing’s Lisa Katayama, Josh Strom remarked, “We go to conferences to have friends with us, maybe buy art or badges, go to a panel or see a show. There are swinger parties and fetishes, but the fandom doesn’t matter.” And sex is especially misguided in fursuits. Only a fraction of furries has complete fur outfits, for one thing. Furthermore, as Plante points out, “Almost all fur followers will expressly show that sex in a fursuit is utterly unwanted (not exciting, injurious and not interested).”
About the quiz
A survey carried out at Furry Fiesta 2013 found that96.3% of male and 78.3% of female participants reported viewing pelvic pornography, which is a broad category and usually quite similar to regular pornography, though with added furry characteristics. Men reported that they were looking at pelvic porn 41.5 times a month, on average.
But additionally, they said that their participation in the fandom was largely non-sexual. Males reported expenditure of 34% on sexual content online and women reported expenditure of only 21.4%.
The development of a fursona was described as “one of the most widespread furry fandom behavior.”
It is very little we know where furries are inspired by furries. However, many Furries say that their fursona was mostly developed inside, because of their favorite media or mythology. The majority of furries also claim a common feature as a motivation to select a specific species. In contrast to actual animal behavior, these are mainly iconic features as attributed to the species by humans. Some prominent Fursona species are especially strongly connected with certain characteristics, such as the ‘faithful’ dogs, and the ‘promiscuous’ rabbits.
