Domestic cats, also known as domesticated cats, were created thousands of years ago through selective breeding. Domestic cats, who were once wild cats and huge cats, were bred to have the “wild” qualities erased from their DNA.
Humans utilize artificial selection, a phrase originated by biologist Charles Darwin, to generate new species with desirable features. Breeders choose two parents with beneficial features to reproduce with, resulting in offspring with those desired traits.

The Cat Fanciers’ Association is the primary registrar for pedigreed cat breeds in the United States. The association recognizes 42 breeds, including Siamese, Persian, Maine coon cat, and Bengal. The International Cat Association recognizes 71 breeds, ranging from the ancient Abyssinian to more recent forms such as the koi “werewolf” cat and the wild-looking Chausie, which was derived from a wild jungle cat. Both organizations are established in the United States, sponsor competitions, and uphold purebred cat breed standards.
Domestic Cats Exist in an Infinite Variety Domestic cats come in an infinite variety of sizes, shapes, coat lengths, and color patterns. All of the solid colors are available, as well as mixes of all of them—purebred or not.
