The Great Shining novel, first published in 1977 by Stephen King. Perhaps only overshadowed through the 1980 film adaptation, the novel is one of the best-known and lasting horror stories ever. In 2013, Dr. Sleep published a sequence.
The Shining is located in the 1970s in Colorado. It focuses on the Torrance family: Jack’s husband, Wendy’s wife, and Danny. At the start of the novel, Jack is engaged for the winter of the off-season as the guardian of the secluded Overlook Hotel. The hotel manager informs him of the murder of the previous guardian, Delbert Grady, inside the hotel by his whole family. In particular, Grady “killed a hatchet of the girls, a shotgun to his wife, and himself in the same manner.” The Overlook has a long and awful history, as Jack learns later.
It has housed unlawful businesses over the years, awful murders and executions in mob-style, and may have changed hands multiple times because of this.
However, Jack is determined to be the guardian. In the past, Jack, a writer aspiring and former school teacher, has had problems with drunkenness and fury; once, while trying to discipline him he has accidentally broken his son’s arm. Most recently, Jack attacked a young student who released the air from his tires. Jack cost him his work as a teacher and forced his wife, Wendy, to consider divorce quite intensely.

The cold and scary “The Shining” of Stanley Kubrick challenges us to decide: Who is the reliable observer? Who can we trust in events? The characters seem to be sufficiently reliable in the first scene during a work interview, even if the dialog re-evokes a little talk in “2001” on the space station. We meet Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson), a man with his wife and son who plans to live alone in the winter. He is the guardian of Overlook Hotel’s snowbound.
His employer admonishes that a past caretaker murdered and committed suicide with his wife and two girls, but Jack trusts him: “That’s not going to happen with me, Mr. Ullman, you can be guaranteed. And I’m sure she’ll be fascinated when I tell her about it as far as my wife is concerned.
They’re alone, then, and a routine starts: Jack sits in the grand hall and bumps into his machine, while Wendy and Danny have a daily life version with a lot of breakfast cereal, toys, and TV.

About the quiz
Ullman tells the history of the Overlook since 1909, but Jack cuts it short abruptly. He discloses the death of his wife and two young girls in drunken fury by Delbert Grady, a winter babysitter from 1970 to 1971, and then murdered himself. Ullman knows that Jack was sacked when he lost his temper from his teaching position at Vermont Prep school and that he was an alcoholic recoverer. Jack guarantees that they are in control of both problems. Ullman claims he’s got the position, but only because Al Shockley, Jack’s friend, who has a lot to do with the Overlook, insists.
In the meantime, Jack in their miserable flat in Boulder, Colorado, is waiting for Wendy and Danny. Her husband and her son concerned Wendy. She recalls when Danny shattered Danny’s arm accidentally a couple of years ago. Her spouse hopes that she could keep his rage on a lid. Also, we will guess which The Shining character you are.
During Wendy’s concern, he goes around the boiler room with the man who built the Overlook, Watson. Watson warns Jack to check the boiler periodically over and again. Otherwise, there will be an increase in pressure within and it will erupt and take the view. Wattson also tells Jack, after her much younger lover left her in the evening, that a woman died in a hotel room this season.
