Which The Old Way character are you quiz will tell if you are one of the Colton Briggs, Clark, Brooke, or James McCallister after you answer all questions. The same is true for anyone thinking that Cage will suddenly deliver one of his masterfully reflective performances that serves as a reminder to everyone just how great an actor he can be when given the correct material and puts his whole effort into it. (See also the Pig of 2021.) Neither of those Cages are available here. After taking him out of the scene, what’s left is an extremely generic genre film that appears torn between being a traditional homage to Western revenge films and a contemporary updating of them.

The Old Way Quiz
In The Old Way Quiz, you will need to answer questions about Cage who portrays Colton Briggs, a cold-hearted gunslinger going about his violent job. However, he has left all of that behind when the story picks up 20 years later. He now owns the neighborhood general store in the surrounding town and is married to the attractive Ruth (Kerry Knuppe), with whom he shares a small daughter named Brooke (Ryan Kiera Armstrong). But of course, just because he is finished with the past doesn’t mean that the past is finished with him, as was once said in a marginally better movie.
One day, a quartet of men led by escaped convict James McCallister corner Ruth after forcing him to walk Brooke to school before opening the business (Noah Le Gros). She doesn’t know them, but James is likely to be aware of her husband—Colton killed his father in front of his eyes when he was a young boy—and kills her violently to make a point.

Which The Old Way Character Are You?
In Which The Old Way Character Are You Quiz you will need to answer questions about Colton who quickly shifts into revenge mode and sets off in search of Ruth’s killers once Brooke and he return home and learn what has transpired. The only problem is Brooke’s presence; after his initial scheme to care for her falls through, he ends up taking her on his journey. We soon discover the reason for their strangely icy interpersonal dynamic—neither of them is able to process emotions like loss and anxiety in “normal” ways—as he trains her to shoot and take care of herself along the way.
While it may not be appropriate for human interactions, this can be advantageous for setting out on the type of perilous expedition they have undertaken. The two eventually make it to the town where McCallister and his men have been hiding out for the past many years as they plan their massive retaliation.

The screenplay by Carl W. Lucas combines aspects from films like “River of No Return” and “Unforgiven” with bits lifted from other Westerns (True Grit is perhaps the most obvious source, notably in the overly verbose dialogue). There are also some moments that may bring back memories for fans of Nicolas Cage’s earlier work. For example, the previous attempt to care for Brooke is similar to one of the most infamous scenes from “Kick-Ass,” and the overall story may remind some of the excellent “Pig.” But “The Old Way” never quite succeeds in weaving these components into an engaging story.
After a while, some of the story devices—like McCallister’s desire to carry out his enormously inventive and time-consuming revenge plot rather than simply shooting him when he has the opportunity, as he is counseled to do by cynical colleague Eustice (Clint Howard)—become ridiculous. (Suffice to say, you might want to try applying to another gang if the wisest and sanest advice comes from the Clint Howard character if you are in an Old West gang.) The emotional oddities that Colton and Brooke possess offer one potentially fascinating aspect, but the movie never really develops it.

How Accurate Is The Old Way Quiz: Which Character Are You?
The Cage performance, ostensibly its main selling point, hurts “The Old Way” as well. Although there are a few instances where he appears to be practicing for his impending role as Dracula, of all things, his work isn’t particularly horrible, but because his primary image is so modern, he unavoidably feels out of place in what is supposed to be a conventional take on the Western.
(His presence there wasn’t as strange because “Butcher’s Crossing” was more of a commentary on the genre than an example.) His eccentricity might have been a better fit for the villain (in fact, Le Gros at times seems to be actively channeling the Cage of old as the twisted villain). Even with as many eccentricities as his character does, he never quite succeeds in becoming a particularly compelling hero.
