Frank and Bill
Government authorities in Jakarta, Indonesia, present an infected corpse to a mycologist two days prior to the global pandemic, who informs them that there is neither a cure nor a vaccination and suggests blasting the entire city to stop further outbreaks. Ellie tells Joel and Tess that she is currently being moved to the west in order to be used in the search for a cure. When they learn that the route to the State House is crowded with infected, they take a shortcut through a history museum, where they are ambushed by blind infected known as “clickers” and Ellie gets bitten. When they get to the State House, they discover the Fireflies are dead. Tess admits to being bit, and Ellie’s bite starts to recover, demonstrating her resistance. When Joel kills an infected, the swarm is made aware of their whereabouts. Tess stays behind, burning up the building and murdering herself along with the horde, while she persuades him to flee and take Ellie to their allies in Lincoln, Massachusetts.
Beginning their trek to meet Bill and Frank, Joel and Ellie set out. Ellie observes proof that during the early stages of the pandemic, the authorities executed innocent people. In 2007, after leaving Baltimore, Frank finds Bill’s home by accident. Bill is a paranoid survivalist who unwillingly accepts Frank into his home. With a shared love of cuisine and music, the two guys start dating. Years later, Frank makes radio contact with Tess, and the two start a shaky friendship. Frank, who is terminally ill, requests Bill to help him commit suicide after they get married because he is dying. Bill too commits suicide because he can’t bear to live without Frank. Joel and Ellie find a letter Bill left for Joel when they get there. Bill wrote that giving Frank protection gave his life significance and that he had left Joel and Tess all of his supplies. Joel is unaware that Ellie has taken Frank’s gun. To find Tommy, they borrow Bill’s truck and head off.
Samuel and Henry
Joel and Ellie are forced to take a detour to Kansas City while passing through Missouri; there, they are ambushed. Ellie saves Joel by shooting the third bandit with Frank’s gun as he nearly chokes him to death after Joel kills the other two. More thieves discover the bodies, and their leader Kathleen launches a manhunt because she thinks Joel and Ellie may be in touch with Henry. Ellie receives advice from Joel regarding the gunfight and is given her gun back. Perry, Kathleen’s deputy, believes he has located Henry’s hiding place, but something is developing beneath the structure. Kathleen requests that it be kept a secret until Henry is located. Joel and Ellie spend the night in a high-rise apartment in the hopes that they can find a way out of the city during the day. When they awaken, they discover Sam and Henry holding them at gunpoint.
Joel and Ellie agree to a flimsy ceasefire with Henry and Sam. Joel is prepared to split ways, but Henry suggests that they leave the city together through a network of underground tunnels that only Henry is aware of. Joel reluctantly accepts. By giving him over to FEDRA in exchange for treatment for Sam’s leukemia, Henry admits to Joel that he was responsible for the killing of Kathleen’s brother. Sam and Ellie quickly become pals. After making their way out of the tunnels, the party comes under fire from a window on a higher floor. When Kathleen shows up with her militia, Joel discovers that he was radioing Kathleen and murders him. A army of infected emerge from underground, including a giant “bloater” that beheads Perry and a child clicker that mauls Kathleen, before Kathleen can kill Henry. Sam reveals to Ellie that he was bitten on the leg after the party makes it to a motel. Sam attacks Ellie the following morning after becoming infected; Henry kills Sam before committing suicide. Burying them, Joel and Ellie depart on foot in a westward direction.

Joel and Ellie arrive in Jackson, Wyoming, a small but vibrant hamlet, three months after Henry and Sam pass away. There, Joel is reunited with Tommy, whose wife Maria is expecting. Joel worries that he won’t be able to keep Ellie safe, so he begs Tommy to take her to the Fireflies. When Ellie hears them, she confronts Joel, who adamantly states that they are splitting up. Joel reconsiders after thinking of Sarah, and he and Ellie ride their horses to Colorado. The Fireflies are discovered to have left their headquarters and may have relocated to a hospital in Utah. Joel and Ellie make an effort to get away from some robbers. Joel kills one of them when one of them attacks him, but he gets stabbed in the process. Joel and Ellie manage to get away from the others, but after Joel quickly passes out and falls off their horse, Ellie is unclear of what to do.
