“We believe this place to be like a hospital intensive care center.” Thus says Paul Edgecomb, head of the Death Row during the Depression in a Louisiana prison. Paul (Tom Hanks) is a pleasant man, probably a good guard over the usual Louisiana death river, his crew is skilled and human, with the exception of Percy, who’s an aunt and is the governor of his husband and who could have any job in the state that he wants. A new inmate enters one day. He is a giant, black man, framed onto the ward and the duck under the doors by the low-angle camera. Paul doesn’t have a good summer.
