Both the children and the assassin who hunts them are returned. In the most recent installment of the “Scream” series by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (a.k.a. Radio Silence), the most recent group of Woodsboro survivors are building a new existence far from Ghostface’s shadow in New York City. Sadly, their tranquility is fleeting. After all, this is “Scream VI.”
As the body count rapidly rises following the murder of a film professor, Samantha Carpenter (Melissa Barrera), her sister Tara (Jenna Ortega), and the twins Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown) and Chad (Mason Gooding) prepare to flee, but they are unable to outrun this new Ghostface. With the help of several newcomers, including Anika (Devyn Nekoda), Josh (Danny Brackett), Ethan (Jack Champion), Quinn (Liana Liberato), and Detective Bailey (Dermot Mulroney), the newly formed “core four” will once again have to take on the killer(s), this time in the heart of the Big Apple. Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) and Kirby Reed are also returning characters.
Although there have been worse “Scream” sequels, Ghostface’s mask is beginning to exhibit signs of age. The screenplay is passable but superficial; it raises intriguing concepts but never develops them. Early in the film, there are references to trauma and the characters’ coping mechanisms; however, as soon as the first murders are reported on the nightly news, these worries all but vanish. Scream VI doesn’t say much about horror fandom itself—which, in this case, turns extremely toxic and deadly—aside from horror nerd sight gags like costumes from other frightening movies in the background and Easter egg references to horror directors and movie podcasts. Although Wes Craven’s initial “Scream” was the first in the series to parody the tropes of the genre, the most recent episodes have increased the meta-explanation of horror movie conventions without really advancing the plot. By this point, they almost seem to be for comedic effect, a “if you know, you know” joke for the audience to chuckle and nod in agreement with, not much for cutting-edge meta-commentary. That has, dare I say it, been done to death.

Between the first kill and the film’s climactic showdown, there are a number of suspenseful set pieces where Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett demonstrate that the series still has some life left in it despite Guy Busick and James Vanderbilt’s script running out of steam. In one memorable scene, Ghostface follows the party to the homes of Sam, Tara, and Quinn. He kills a few of them, but three of them succeed in barricading themselves in a room, giving them the opportunity to cross to safety with the aid of a lovestruck neighbor and a scaffold. The sequence creates the kind of tension that makes one catch their breath while waiting to see if all the unfortunate people survive. Another scene shows one of the major characters staring at Ghostface while traveling on a crowded train and being powerless to defend herself. Being attacked in broad daylight is a terrifying and eerie sensation.

However, Sidney Prescott, a franchise regular, is conspicuously absent from this ensemble. (Neve Campbell). In a film that reveres its own lore, missing this important element of the series feels like a misstep. Campbell claimed that she didn’t receive a financial offer sufficient enough for her comeback. Cox enjoys more of the spotlight while Campbell is away, eventually getting a call from Ghostface, and engaging the killer in another round of combat. But Jenna Ortega, whose smudged mascara and razor-sharp one-liners jolt every scene she’s in with electricity, continues to be the greatest breakout star of the new “Scream” movies. In contrast to the previous film, where she spent the majority of the running time fairly injured, this time she is given a few excellent opportunities to deliver some powerful punches and kicks.

Surprisingly, New York City itself comes off as the worst-looking; it may even hold the honor of being the least convincing representation of NYC west of Vancouver. It’s difficult to ignore the made-up stops that stand in for other well-known places when Montreal is dressing up as New York, such as Blackmore College at the end of the 2 and 5 lines in place of Brooklyn College. While the filmmakers make use of some elements of the city, such as a confrontation with Ghostface in a bodega and apartments facing one another for a brief “Rear Window” suspense scene, other sections of the film left this New Yorker feeling disoriented because there was no sense of the city’s skyline or location. Even visitors from other cities might note a few significant landmarks that are absent that are present in other films.

When it comes to sequels, “Scream VI” is a strange, self-referential beast, like a serpent that has consumed its own tail and is left with nothing. What will it require to breathe new life into it and advance? For now, we have a scary movie that makes us chuckle out loud in a nostalgic way, a thriller with some effective scares and corny jokes that elicit more laughs than screams, and yes, a snippet of “Red Right Hand” by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. I have nothing against anyone who enjoys the straightforward thrills of a classic slasher; I was just expecting for a little more substance to balance out the film’s copious amounts of gore.
