Madeleine (Adele Haenel) is unaware that she is a part of a romantic comedy. She believes she is in a battle film. Or even better, watch a post-apocalyptic grim film. Not a romantic comedy at all. She doesn’t start to grin until an hour and twenty minutes into Thomas Cailley’s brand-new French romantic comedy “Love at First Fight.” It’s a brave and novel decision to make the main character of a rom-com this cold and emotionless. Although the screwball dames of the 1930s undoubtedly had their idiosyncrasies and gave it their all in any linguistic conflict, they didn’t persevere for as long as Madeleine does. The tension and humor of “Love at First Fight” (with the much superior French title “Les Combattants”) come from Madeleine’s oddness. All of the well-known rom-com clichés are present, but they have a twisted, upside-down vibe to them. Almost all traditional gender positions have been reversed. The tension is maintained beautifully and humorously (the movie is very funny) by Cailley (who also co-wrote the screenplay with Claude Le Pepe) until almost the very end.
In their small seaside town’s self-defense class, which was conducted on the beach, Madeleine and Arnaud (Kevin Asas) “meet cute.” Arnaud initially refuses to engage in combat with her because “I don’t hit girls,” but ultimately they begin grappling, and she acts as though she’s practicing for a “Rambo” film. Despite being embarrassed by the incident, he naturally falls in love with her right away, as the title suggests. Who was that ruthless, ferocious blonde with an evil smile holding me in a magnificent chokehold in front of all my friends while wearing a racing swimsuit and cargo pants? Arnaud waits until he understands what he wants to do with his life by working in the family business of carpentry. All of the young people in “Love at First Fight” are like that. They have left their institution. There is nothing they can do. A acquaintance of Arnaud’s is relocating to Saskatoon (Arnaud says, confused, “I thought you were moving to Canada.”). One of the guys states, “France is rotting. Nothing is left in this place.
Since Arnaud is constructing a garden trellis in the backyard of Madeleine’s parents’ home, he comes to know her a little bit. She totally overwhelms Arnaud, who is a shy person. She believes that society will completely disappear within a few years and that the entire world is doomed. Only the resilient will endure. She blends raw salmon into a smoothie to prepare it for consumption. She rolls her eyes at the “dance floor sluts,” silly females committed to silly lives, when she is at a dance club with Arnaud. She believes that having pleasure makes people delusional. She left her Master’s degree and intends to enlist in the Army. Because Ranger training is the most challenging, she desires to be one. She swims for a long time in the water while carrying heavy tiles on her back. She tells Arnaud to “combat swim.” When she accepts Arnaud’s invitation to join his family for dinner, she regales the table with a monologue about the impending dystopian terror that will strike each of them. “Well. This is happy,” Arnaud’s mother says. Arnaud, however, is mesmerized. Madeleine is amusing to him. Madeleine is hilarious. When Arnaud adds that he enjoys cats, she bluntly asks, “Do you know that if you die, your cat will eat your face in three days?”

The presence of a brightly colored French Army recruitment van parked by the beach boardwalk, conducting workshops, and signing people up heightens the anxiety of the unknown future. Arnaud has already decided to follow in the footsteps of his recently dead father and become a woodworker, but after meeting Madeleine, he begins to consider joining the Army as well. to simply be with her! She doesn’t even seem interested in him as a potential partner, and in her dreams about the end of the world, she presumably doesn’t need romance. However, they both enroll in a two-week training camp where they will stay in barracks, participate in paintball war games, and perform physical training routines.

Madeleine figures that since her entire existence has been a training montage, she will be the best at the camp. The strategy, however, is not followed. She finds the program to be too harsh. She complains that her bed is nice and tidy. She finds it repulsive that they dine in a cafeteria. These individuals must be aware that by September at the latest, they will all have to fend for themselves in the wilderness. When Madeleine proposes that it is “every man for himself” in such situations when discussing dispersal tactics in a classroom, the teacher looks frank dismayed.

How can a relationship with such a being grow? Does Arnaud understand what he’s entering? She is such a force of nature, and he is such a sweet, shy individual. The performances by both actors are extremely endearing and humorous, never betraying their characters by speaking down to them or exaggerating their “quirks.” Adele Haenel successfully conveys that Madeleine is, in fact, a funny and sweet person who has chosen to button all that up in the name of being practical. The way Arnaud perceives Madeleine also helps us understand how to perceive her. If no one else has “seen the light,” well, that’s too bad; at least she’s ready for the end of the world.

Since this is Cailley’s first feature, his direction is assured and uncomplicated, with flashes of intense beauty (scenes in the deep blue and black of night, waves of smoke filling the sky from a nearby forest fire) reflecting the atmosphere of any given scene. He has a great ear for dialogue and a great sense for behavior. In a movie like this, the connection is what counts. Cailley is aware of this and adopts a straightforward strategy.

The climactic scene of “Love at First Fight” veers into melodrama and excitement while abruptly reinforcing gender roles to the point where they essentially resemble damsels-in-distress-tied-to-railroad-tracks. That outcome might disappoint some people. I wasn’t because the real work had already been done at that time; the characters had become well-known, and the audience had become so invested in their odd little romance that it could not be destroyed. It really meant something when these two characters did eventually share a kiss. And towards the end of the movie, when Madeleine abruptly turns to Arnaud and smiles broadly in his direction, I understood just how successful “Love at First Fight” had been. She hadn’t been suppressing that smile in the early scenes, either. You don’t feel that way at all because, despite Haenel’s hilarious portrayal, the character’s lack of humor seems to be ingrained in her very being. But the events of the narrative as they developed, Madeleine’s experiences during that time, and her friendship with Arnaud all came together to make that broad smile possible. The character is not compromised, which is the finest part. Madeleine doesn’t change. There is no other method that Arnaud would prefer. If you really consider it, both of those are kind of lovely, as is “Love at First Fight.”
