The Netflix series “FUBAR” frequently has the impression that it ought to succeed. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a celebrity of the 1980s, parodying his action persona in a streaming series has a lot of potential, after all. It’s as if someone chose to return to the original with a show that feels like a very slight rewrite from becoming “True Lies” itself after learning that CBS was adapting it into a TV series. Ah-nuld performs the role of a man divided between being a super spy and a family man once more. Even one of the co-stars from that movie makes a late-season cameo appearance! If “FUBAR” appears to be referencing James Cameron, it isn’t doing it in a way that is consistently clever or enjoyable enough. The best episodes of the season have just enough B-movie action thrills to keep viewers interested, but this is the epitome of Netflix’s “Watch While You Use Your Phone” television; perhaps you won’t notice its lack of original thought or willingness to recycle the same dull moments repeatedly.
The 75-year-old actor plays agent Luke Brunner, who is about to retire until he accepts a last-ditch assignment to free a hostage from the clutches of bad guy Boro (Gabriel Luna). Brunner has known Boro since he was a young boy, so he can simply slip behind enemy lines. He actually supported him as he grew up, primarily out of guilt at killing Boro’s evil dad. It obviously didn’t work since Boro is the same vile, power-hungry madman who is constantly searching for sufficiently ominous objects like dirty bombs or nuclear material.
Brunner is shocked to learn that the covert agent he needs to save is his daughter Emma (the excellently cast Monica Barbaro) when he arrives at Boro’s stronghold. They were able to maintain their superspy status a secret from one another as well as other close family members including Luke’s ex-wife Tally (Fabiana Udenio) and Emma’s boyfriend Carter (Jay Baruchel). Thus, “FUBAR” develops into a series of alternating spy missions and therapy sessions between father and daughter, sometimes quite literally involving a CIA psychologist known only as Dr. Pepper (Scott Thompson). The premise of the show is that the Brunners save the world and then discuss EVERY family issue they have ever had as though they have never spoken before. Even though it’s a touch silly, “FUBAR” suffers from repetition. I would have leapt out of the spy plane these two frequently utilize if I had to hear Luke’s lack of support for Emma or how Emma would experience the same issues as her father in her new relationship one more time.

To be fair, episodes do take the time to focus on a few ancillary characters. The plot of “FUBAR” frequently resembles one of those acronym CBS dramas (e.g., “NCIS,” “S.W.A.T.,” etc.), where the charming main actor and stunning lead actress are accompanied by witty supporting characters to lighten the atmosphere. In this instance, witty Barry (Milan Carter) is the one who has feelings for newcomer Tina (Aparna Brielle). The classy Aldon (Travis Van Winkle) and the sardonic Roo (Fortune Feimster) are Luke’s closest field pals. Van Winkle handles himself well enough to be intriguing, yet these non-characters frequently annoy rather than hold the audience’s interest. The way Tina and Barry were courting was quite aggravating to me. Watching them ultimately start dating is like to watching young people learn about dating on a Nickelodeon program.

This interaction is only one of several bizarrely sanitized aspects of “FUBAR,” an action-movie-styled show that plays like a dad joke. They have more problems than Sports Illustrated, among other shocking statements, are present in great quantity. Here, life-or-death crises are either dismissed with a B-movie shrug or reduced to overblown blather. The late-season plotline involving a dying child is especially awful in terms of deception, and the show’s early promise fades as it becomes nearly entirely about Boro. Emma’s first-half assignments, which involve her going undercover for a “Honey Pot” mission, and a cameo by Adam Pally, indicate that the second half of the season will be more surprising than the first.

Arnold’s apparent disinterest in his own show doesn’t help. Who can blame him after the Nth discussion about his lousy parenting? And because of the uninteresting plot that came before the cliffhanger that concludes the season and sets up a new one, even that lacks urgency. However, there should be widespread worry over the prospect of more Brunner Family Therapy.
