Childhood

Elvis Aron Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, on January 8, 1935. (He later changed the spelling of his middle name to the biblical form of Aaron.) Presley was supposed to be a twin, but his brother, Jesse Garon (also spelled Jessie), died before birth. Presley rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most famous names in rock ‘n’ roll.

Presley’s family had little money and moved around a lot because he was raised by loving, working-class parents. He was deeply devoted to his parents, particularly his mother, Gladys, and was raised to believe in God. Presley and his parents attended the Assembly of God Church, where gospel music became an important influence on him. Also, you must try to play this Elvis Presley quiz.

‘Heartbreak Hotel’ was his first No. 1 hit.

Presley began to gain a following in 1955, with fans drawn to his unusual musical style, provocative gyrating hips, and good looks. Colonel Tom Parker, his manager, arranged for him to sign with RCA Records that same year. Presley was on a roll in 1956, having achieved his first No. 1 single with “Heartbreak Hotel,” as well as his first No. 1 album, Elvis Presley, and signing a film contract with Paramount Pictures. Despite the outrage caused by his sexy dance moves, he became a popular guest on a number of television variety shows.

Service in the Military

Presley was soon in demand as a musician and actor. Love Me Tender (1956), his first film, was a box office success. Even a stint in the United States military couldn’t dampen Presley’s thriving career. He was drafted in 1957 and was inducted into the Army the following March. He eventually spent about a year and a half in Germany. Gladys Presley, Presley’s beloved mother, died just before he left for Europe. He was given permission to return to Memphis for the funeral. Presley returned to duty, deeply saddened by her death. His spirits were lifted slightly while in Germany when he met Priscilla Beaulieu, a young teenager. On May 1, 1967, in Las Vegas, Nevada, the couple fell in love and married.

About the quiz

Daughter, Divorce from Priscilla, and Substance Abuse

Presley’s personal life appeared to be improving around this time. He married Priscilla in 1967, and the couple had a daughter, Lisa Marie, the following year. Unfortunately, this happy period would not last. Presley’s marriage was in disarray by the early 1970s. When the couple divorced in 1973, Priscilla was granted custody of Lisa Marie. Presley was also dealing with personal issues, such as a growing prescription drug addiction; the once-thin rock star was battling a weight problem, and his destructive lifestyle caught up with him that fall when he was hospitalized for drug-related health problems. Despite his personal difficulties, Presley remained a popular attraction in Las Vegas and on tour. In June 1977, he gave his final concert in Indianapolis, Indiana. Following the concert, he returned to Graceland, his Memphis mansion, to prepare for another tour.

Legacy and Death

Presley died of heart failure on August 16, 1977, at the age of 42. It was later determined that his death was caused by his use of prescription drugs. Presley was laid to rest near the graves of his mother, Gladys, father, Vernon, and grandmother, Minnie Mae Hood Presley, on the Graceland grounds.
