I’m not afraid to admit that I had certain prejudices going into Bendy and the Ink Machine. When your first exposure to an IP is the retail wall at a GameStop, it’s difficult not to. I went in expecting a satirical rip-off of Five Nights at Freddy’s, completely prepared to endure through a couple of hours of YouTube-friendly, ironic jump scares. Fortunately, what I got was a lot more substantial and engaging experience. Bendy and the Ink Machine is a fascinating horror adventure fuelled by distinct characters, complex mythology, and appreciation for animation as both a wonderful art form and a space where creative individuals are subject to mental and physical abuse from others higher up the capital food chain.

Editor’s Picks

In Bendy and the Ink Machine, players take on the role of Henry Stein, a former animator at Joey Drew Studios, the famed firm responsible for the titular Bendy, 30 years ago. Bendy is a cartoon demon who has a striking resemblance to 1930s cartoon characters such as Mickey Mouse and Betty Boop.

Henry departed the studio in a sour mood, which was highly hinted to be the result of an all-too-common ownership dispute over the character. The game begins with a letter from Joey Drew, inviting Henry to return to the studio after a 30-year sabbatical. When Henry enters, the studio is unrecognizable, bathed in the same gentle, yellow light as the Bendy cartoons themselves. From there, the other half of the title comes into play. Bendy and the Ink Machine is a first-person horror game in which the player explores the cursed studio, solving puzzles, searching for answers, and avoiding terrifying nightmares. While combat will be there, the majority of the experience will be exploration, since the game likes to emphasize ambiance and narrative over action. This is most likely due to the game’s vastness and grandeur, which are mostly concealed by its strange design. Unfortunately, it is frequently betrayed by symptoms of bursting seams, ranging from malfunctions to unpleasant design choices that help to pad out the experience unnecessarily. None of these moments killed the game for me as a whole, but they did stand out in their own right.

Bendy and the Ink Machine, at its best, haunts the player with horrible music and pulls them through the horror with intriguing bread crumbs towards either solving the secrets of the scenario or simply presenting hope for Henry’s escape. This atmosphere is naturally punctuated by thrilling cliffhangers between episodes that create new questions, or by moments that rip those hopes just out of reach just before the finish line.

About the quiz

These are the times when Bendy stands out from the crowd, and these are the ones that stayed with me long after I was through. It also exposes a sense of heart and humanity in the end that I wasn’t expecting, which truly ties the game’s themes and how they relate to their real-life inspirations together nicely.

Obviously, I’m not going to go into spoiler zone here, but if you’re like animation, especially its history and all the not-so-shiny things that go with it, there’s a lot to cover here. Everything you’d expect to find when you explore the stages and collect audio records appears ownership issues, dissatisfied staff, abuse, theme park ambitions, failing merchandise, and more all play a role in the plot, both in the background and the foreground. A lot of what you get out of Bendy depends on what you do with the information you learn, and leaving so much up to player interpretation is vital for obtaining the extra metatextual mileage you want from a horror work with its own, distinct mythology.
