Marcus (Woody Harrelson), a disgraced minor-league basketball coach sentenced to 90 days of community service coaching the Friends, a team whose players have intellectual disabilities, wonders, “If I can’t say the R-word, what do I call them?” The magistrate responds, “Their names.”

Bobby Farrelly’s “Champions,” which is based on the 2018 Spanish film “Campeones,” follows the basic outline of every other motivational sports film about a hangdog leader in need of redemption. The cringe-worthy part is that it completely ignores the humanity of its squad of disabled basketball players and uses them only as a means of attaining this redemption.

Marcus, played by Harrelson, starts out the movie being cocky, aggressive, and every other stereotype you’d anticipate for this kind of character. Even with the distinctive charm that Harrelson brings to every character he plays, it’s difficult to understand why we should want to spend two hours watching this guy in 2023. His one-night stand-turned-lover Alex (Kaitlin Olson) isn’t much better when it comes to character development, saying awful things like “I’m a lady over 40. I need things. But thankfully, Olson gives her portrayal a few more nuances than the character is given on the written page.

Editor’s Picks

Marcus apologizes to Alex and admits his mistake by asking how her sibling Johnny (Kevin Iannucci) acquired his intellectual disability. She has to respond by saying that he was born with Down syndrome and that you don’t acquire it. The film’s main premise is that no one viewing it has any prior knowledge of intellectual disabilities, so it constantly explains their existence rather than letting them exist.
But you shouldn’t waste any more time and start this Champions 2023 quiz.

The recreation center manager Julio (Cheech Marin) previously revealed the team’s private affairs to Marcus. We see brief glimpses of their occupations and homes as his speech is voiced over. The filmmakers, however, never bothered to actually spend any time with these people as they went about their daily lives. Instead, they present the audience with a distant, almost ethnographic view of their lives. They are not complicated people worth spending real time with, according to the filmmakers, who only see them as educational resources for Marcus and the audience.

But the plot devotes a lot of screen time to the developing romance between Marcus and Alex. We see it develop from straight sex to restaurant dinners, Marcus witnessing Alex perform Shakespeare at work, and then Marcus finally coming over to her and Johnny’s house for their mother’s cheesy meatloaf Monday.

The dynamic Friends cast—Madison Tevlin, Joshua Felder, Kevin Iannucci, Ashton Gunning, Matthew Von Der Ahe, Tom Sinclair, James Day Keith, Casey Metcalfe, and Bradley Edens—whose star power, charisma, and comedic timing is wasted in one-liners and stale jokes—is also negatively impacted by this disregard for the humanity of these characters.

Every character has a storyline, but most of them are related to getting to the Special Olympics North American Regional Championship. By the time the credits start, it’s not shocking that none of the Friends actors are mentioned alongside the movie’s non-disabled stars before the title treatment, given how disrespectfully the movie treats them throughout.

When the squad finally makes it to Winnipeg for the championship, they are, of course, trailing going into halftime, and Marcus delivers the expected motivational locker room speech. As a result, and in spite of the movie’s best efforts, the line Marcus uses to tell them that they are already winners because of all the “stuff they put up with from ignorant people every day” is probably the most cringe-worthy scene in the entire thing.

About the quiz

When lead coach Phil (Ernie Hudson) fires Marcus from his assistant coaching job at the start of “Champions,” he tells him he needs to get to know the players on more than just a professional level. The same is true for the filmmakers, who must extend the Friends the same compassion and recognize their full humanity.
